  7. Ex Animo: Faith 47

Ex Animo is the most complete collection of the work
of Faith 47. Faith 47 is a self-taught artist, everything she
has learned comes from the street. Faith was born in the
graffiti world and was a very active writer in South Africa
until she started traveling and painting in the streets of the
world, especially in problematic places that needed media
attention. Anyone can make art in the streets, but a rare few
create socially impactful content, and there is no denying
that Faith’s work has transformed perspectives among
her global audience. Her name Faith symbolizes her trust
and hope in humanity, symbolizes the trust with which she
navigates through the world, and her name reaches beyond
identity, becoming symbolic of a motivation to create art
for progress. Following Murakami, Faith writes “We need to
stop the debates on our age and open our hearts so that
we can see better”. With the contribution of Kristin Farr
of Juxtapoz and more than 150 color images, Ex Animo

  12. Born to Run - NYC Subway Graffiti on the IND and BMT lines

Despite playing canvas to a long list of talented writers, the IND (Independent) and BMT (Brooklyn Manhattan Transit) lines have been underrepresented in graffiti history. This is now rectified with a collection of high-quality images from the 1970s and 80s that capture works by heavyweights from the BMT like Lee, Mono, Iz The Wiz, Baby168, OE3, P13, and many others. From Coney Island to Queensboro Plaza and everywhere in between, these nostalgic images capture elevated subway scenes, stations, and subway yards and offer a glimpse through time at Brooklyn and Queens in the height of the NYC subway graffiti era. This truly amazing lineup also features early writers on the IND lines like Pistol, Piper, A’train, and IN, in addition to obscure names and throw-ups from these undocumented corridors. This is an ideal volume of subway art for graffiti artists, fans, historians, and students looking for rare photos on the letter lines.

  13. Urban Art: Creating the urban with art

Urban Art. Creating the Urban with Art was a conference at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2016. The aim of the conference and this publication is to discuss “urban art” in its broadest sense: as an umbrella term, that encompasses a great variety of creative expressions in the urban environment on a global scale. The broad implications of the term “urban art” allow summarizing very different outcomes, styles, media, and techniques ranging from illegal graffiti writing to performative, participatory and architectonical interventions from stickers to legal murals and so forth. In this way urban art as a concept exceeds the common notion  of commercial indoor street art and graffiti and enlarges the perception of the visual and unsanctioned forming of the public sphere. The 16 papers and 2 introductions from researchers of 10 different countries and disciplines are divided in five sections – 1) Public or Urban Art? On Terminology, 2) Digital Media & the Urban (Art), 3) Affect & Performance, 4) Territories and 5) Urban Imaginary & The City.

  14. Museum of Street Art: East Village

Welcome to the Museum of Street Art (MoSA). Not within these pages, but while walking the streets, there is a chance you have been here before. The MoSA concept is intuitive, but you might not have noticed it unless you were looking for it.

A MoSA is a phenomenom that occurs when there is a high concentration of both art and local stakeholder support in a particular outdoor area. This combination creates living, breathing outdoor museums in our cities. Entry is free and daily exhibits are managed by the residents, landlords, local government, visitors, and mother nature. These stakeholders alter the exhibition every day with their competing opinions and priorities, which in turn creates one of the most dynamic and meritocratic museums in the world. MoSA explores this concept by photographing these museums in their entirety on one particular day, as a record and snapshot in time.

MoSA locations can be found in dozens of cities around the world, but in this edition, we explore the East Village in New York City on June 23, 2017. The East Village has a long history of supporting the arts and showcases a variety of mediums by a host of local and global artists. Read on to see exactly how we captured the exhibit.

All photographs were shot sequentially in 14 hours starting at 12 AM midnight on June 23, 2017. The area of interest covers 430 acres known as the East Village, located in Manhattan, New York. Its boundaries from West to East are from Bowery/4th Ave. to East River Park. Its boundaries North to South are from 14th St. to Houston St. The editor systematically canvassed this area by bicycle to capture each piece of art. "The Streets" began at Bowery and Houston and were traversed Northward in ascending order from Houston to 14th St. "The Avenues" began on Avenue D and Houston and were traversed Westward from Avenue D to Bowery/4th Ave.

  16. Artivism

Artivism, is becoming a common way of denouncing conflicts, of being a megaphone of the unfairness, demanding more public space or pushing political agendas; in short, to highlight what does not work well. Artivists use art as a weapon of public and social exigency charged with particular doses of shrewdness, inventiveness, imagination, sense of humour and, above all, social impact, either throughout impressive pieces or the most subtle and invisible actions. Navigating through the curiosity, emotion and concern of the new artivists; We walk the paths of a creativity committed to reflection, criticism and the eternal pursuit of social justice.

  17. Street to Studio

For fifty years, graffiti and street art have been challenging conventions and stimulating debate around our perceptions of what constitutes art. As the genre enters its sixth decade, this ground-breaking book presents a new interpretation of where street art and graffiti are situated today. Introducing the concept of 'Intermural Art' - art in between the walls - Rafael Schacter presents a genre at a key moment of transition. While many street and graffiti artists are still challenging the orthodoxies of the public sphere, an increasingly large group are reshaping the field by no longer furtively entering the institution, no longer slavishly reproducing exterior works inside, but instead attempting to merge out and in to create a form that articulates graffiti, street and contemporary-art influences. Through forty profiles of the leading proponents of this new approach from around the globe, Rafael Schacter presents a compelling analysis for 'Intermural Art' while also showcasing some of the boldest work being made currently.

  20. JR & Art Spiegelman: The Ghosts of Ellis Island

In August 2014 the French artist JR received an unprecedented invitation to work in the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital, a building on the south side of the island that has been abandoned and closed to visitors since 1954. About ten percent of the millions of migrants who passed through Ellis Island, having been deemed not healthy enough to enter the United States, spent some time in the hospital. For Unframed―Ellis Island, documented in The Ghosts of Ellis Island, JR chose about 20 archival photographs of the hospital's patients and staff and wheat-pasted these images around the abandoned building, creating haunting scenes that bring the history of these rooms back to life: a family looking out at the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, a small boy lying on an empty bed frame, patients staring out of the caged "psychopathic" ward. The work, which is accessible by guided tour, will remain up "until it decides to disappear." Along with images of JR's photographic interventions in the hospital, this publication includes new illustrations by legendary cartoonist Art Spiegelman, who collaborated with JR on illustrated narratives about Ellis Island's immigrants.
JR (born 1983) is best known for his monumental, wheat-pasted street portraiture projects. His ongoing project Unframed involves installing archival images and images from anonymous photographers in new contexts. JR has carried out Unframed projects in Marseille, São Paulo, Vevey, Atlanta, Baden Baden and Washington, DC. In 2014 he worked inside the theater of the NYC Ballet creating a 6,500-square-foot composite image of NYCB dancers depicted nearly life-size that, when seen from above, forms a giant eye. JR won the TED Prize for 2011.
Art Spiegelman (born 1948) is an American cartoonist, editor and comics advocate based in New York City, best known for his graphic novel Maus (1991). His work as coeditor on the comics magazines Arcade and Raw has been influential, and he spent a decade as contributing artist for The New Yorkerwhere he made several high-profile and sometimes controversial covers.

  25. Stik

From the publishers behind Banksy's mega-selling Wall and Piece, comes the fully-illustrated, beautifully presented book by feted London street artist, STIK.

Stik first came to notoriety as an underground street artist who painted life-size stick figures during the night around London’s East End. As a firm believer in the right to protest, the freedom of speech, and basic human rights, Stik has now painted murals in cities, towns and villages all over the world, focusing his work in communities which have not been afraid to express themselves in the face of repression and disenfranchisement.

Having gained an international following, Stik credits his audience with the intelligence to fill in the details with just six lines and two dots to imply emotion. Each piece is a meditation.

This is the first collected volume of his work to date. It reveals the political and artistic inspiration behind the work of one of this country's most brilliant and inspiring artists.

  26. Covert to Overt: The Under/Overground Art of Shepard Fairey

The seminal artist’s recent art and poster works, and his triumphant return to his street-art roots with murals, all in work never before published. Shepard Fairey rose out of the skateboarding scene, creating his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign in the late ’80s, and has since achieved a mainstream recognition that most street artists never find. Fairey’s “Hope” poster, created during Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, is arguably the most iconic American image since Uncle Sam. Fairey has become a pop-culture icon himself, though he has remained true to his street-art roots. OBEY: Covert to Overt showcases his most recent evolution from works on paper to grander art installations, cross-cultural artworks, and music/art collaborations. The book also includes his ubiquitous streetwear and chronicles his return to public artworks. His signature blend of politics, street culture, and art makes Fairey unlike any other subculture/street artist working today.
This book showcases the significant amount of art he has created the last several years: street murals, mixed-media installations, art/music events, countless silk screens, and work from his extremely successful OBEY brand.

  27. If You're Reading This, There's Still Time.

Morley is a Los Angeles-based street artist that specializes in bold, typographic posters which he wheat pastes within the urban landscape. Blending humor, hope and his unique perspective on life, Morley's aim is to act as a friendly voice amongst the cacophony of billboarded messages and corporate slogans. This voice was given a face when he began including an image of himself in each of his pieces, looking to create a more intimate relationship between the artist and the audience than many of his anonymous contemporaries could allow. In 2011, Morley's work caught the eye of Steve Lazarides whose Outsiders imprint began selling his work, describing it thusly: "His sympathetic statements give the tirelessly aspirational residents a welcome reminder of what's important in life: love, simple pleasures, making the world a slightly better place and not hating on yourself too much." Today, he continues to paste his work in any city that doesn't enforce their vandalism laws through caning. Also he made us promise to include the fact that he can hold his breath for over an hour, and that if anyone challenged him to a breath holding contest, they would totally lose - but he was probably lying about that.

  30. Urban intervention, street art and public space

This book it has its direct origin on an international call for papers, issued by Pedro Costa and Paula Guerra, which aimed to give body to a publication on the thematic of creative milieus and cultural scenes in contemporary urban spaces. The organizers of that publication were surprised by the great quality and interest of the proposals for papers which were presented, even if many of them were not focused specifically and directly on the “creative milieus” and “urban scenes” approach they were looking for. Interestingly, many of the papers raised the issue of the relation between urban interventions (particularly street art approaches) and public space. That was so stimulating that the authors, drawing also upon previous work on that area, decided to give birth to another project, complementary to the edition of the original idea of book, which would be specifically focused on issues of urban interventions, street art and public space. For that, they joined Pedro Soares Neves, which have been working for years in the field of street art and urban interventions, is executive director of Urbancreativity international research topic on Graffiti, Street Art and Urban Creativity. The diversity of contributions put together in this book acknowledges the variety of debates and perspectives that mark contemporary discussions on the relation between art and public space, with particular reference to the case of graffiti and street art, which attracted most of the contributors that came from various disciplines and backgrounds.

  • Graffiti World Updated Edition: Street Art from Five Continents

Graffiti World, now updated, is the most comprehensive and bestselling survey of graffiti art ever published. The original collection of more than 2,000 illustrations by over 150 artists around the world is joined by a new section devoted to work created in the five years since the book's first edition.
Graffiti has long been a ubiquitous aspect of the urban landscape, since anonymous, largely unsung spray-can art first hit city walls in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1960s. As hip-hop culture spread from America, graffiti became a worldwide phenomenon, emerging in the 1980s as the symbolic artistic language of young people everywhere.
Today's graffiti artists incorporate a variety of mediums, including stickers, stencils, oils, acrylics, and oil-based chalk, as well as an ever-expanding range of social commentary. This evolution in style and subject matter has guaranteed graffiti's long-lasting influence on art, graphic design, and style around the world.

Memories of Dismaland is my extensive full color photo diary of the amazing temporary pop up theme park erected by Banksy and 58 other artists set up in the seaside resort town of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. Prepared in secret under the guise of constructing a movie set for a Hollywood film company filming a crime thriller called “Grey Fox”, the pop-up exhibition at the Tropicana, a disused lido, was clearly a sinister twist on Disneyland, although Banksy denied any relationship to Disney and actually banned Disney associates from the park that opened during the weekend of 21 August 2015, ran 36 days and closed permanently on 27 September 2015.

  • Explore Everything: Place-Hacking the City

It is assumed that every inch of the world has been explored and charted; that there is nowhere new to go. But perhaps it is the everyday places around us—the cities we live in—that need to be rediscovered. What does it feel like to find the city’s edge, to explore its forgotten tunnels and scale unfinished skyscrapers high above the metropolis? Explore Everything reclaims the city, recasting it as a place for endless adventure.

Plotting expeditions from London, Paris, Berlin, Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, Bradley L. Garrett has evaded urban security in order to experience the city in ways beyond the boundaries of conventional life. He calls it ‘place hacking’: the recoding of closed, secret, hidden and forgotten urban space to make them realms of opportunity.

Explore Everything is an account of the author’s escapades with the London Consolidation Crew, an urban exploration collective.

The book is also a manifesto, combining philosophy, politics and adventure, on our rights to the city and how to understand the twenty-first century metropolis.

  • The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti

Painted murals first appeared in Latin America in the early 20th century; in the 1950s, spray-can graffiti associated with Latino gangs followed, notably the “cholo” graffiti of Los Angeles. Today, street art has traveled to nearly every corner of the globe, evolving into a highly complex and ornate art form. The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti is the definitive survey of international street art, focusing on the world’s most influential urban artists and artworks. Since the lives and works of urban artists are inextricably linked to specific streets and places, this beautifully illustrated volume features specially commissioned “city artworks” that provide an intimate understanding of these metropolitan landscapes.

Organized geographically by country and city, more than 100 of today’s most important street artists―including Espo in New York, Shepard Fairey in Los Angeles, Os Gêmeos in Brazil, and Anthony Lister in Australia―are profiled alongside key examples of their work. The evolution of street art and graffiti within each region is also chronicled, providing essential historical context. With contributions by the foremost authorities on street art and graffiti, this landmark publication provides a nuanced understanding of a widespread contemporary art practice. The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffitiemphasizes urban art’s powerful commitment to a spontaneous creativity that is inherently connected to the architecture of the metropolis.

  • Unsanctioned: The Art on New York Streets

NYC has been and continues to be a beacon for artists, who both feed off and contribute to the City’s energy. This is Luna Park’s love letter to the City and the artists who continue to aspire and inspire.
For the last ten years city librarian Katherine 'Luna Park' Lorimer has been cataloging the art to be found on NYC streets. She quickly learned that for those that pay attention, the street can provide as much of an arts education as a museum. Ever since the City banished graffiti from the subway trains, it's streets have developed into a vast playground for a complex culture, made up of distinct communities, each with their own hierarchies, values and sets of rules. This book is the culmination of a decade of obsessively keeping up with NYC graffiti and street art, a time period which saw a seismic shift in the public perception and acceptance of the artform. The public space within which artists operate is fluid and new boundaries are being pushed every day. The streets are teeming with a vast spectrum of (un)sanctioned art, running the gamut from quick, illegal handstyles to full-blown production murals.
    • Comprehensively documents 10 years in the explosion of creativity to be found on NY’s streets
    • Covers the best of street art, graffiti and intervention

  • Trespass: A History Of Uncommissioned Urban Art

In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and—in many cases—more acceptable. Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century.
Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city’s social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance. The first book to present the full historical sweep, global reach and technical developments of the street art movement, Trespass features key works by 150 artists, and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including JeanTinguelySpencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks.

  • Street Art World

Street art and graffiti are a familiar sight in all our cities. Giant murals commemorate historical events or proclaim the culture of a neighborhood, while tagged walls can function simultaneously as a claim to territory and a backdrop for an urban fashion shoot. Street Art World examines these divergent forms and functions of street art. This strikingly illustrated book explores every aspect of street art, from those who spray it into being to those who revel in it on Instagram, from its place under highway overpasses to one on the austere walls of high art museums. Drawing on over twenty years of research, she juxtaposes the rise and fall of art markets against the vibrancy of the street and urban life, providing a rich history and new ways of contextualizing the words and images—some breathtakingly beautiful—that seem to appear overnight in cities around the world.

  • Shoe is my middle name

Ever since he picked the graffiti name Shoe in 1979, Niels Meulman has been carving out his own path towards the international art world. Being a graffiti pioneer from Amsterdam, he worked with American counterparts such as Dondi White, Rammellzee and Keith Haring in the 1980s. He made the transition from the streets to fine art with a unique fusion of calligraphy and graffiti, which he named Calligraffiti. This soon became a worldwide phenomenon and now plays a significant role within Urban Contemporary Art. It also sparked the catchphrase 'A word is an image, writing is painting'. In recent years Niels Shoe Meulman moved towards a style he calls Abstract Vandalism. Influenced by the great painters of Abstract Expressionism, his work has been shown in count-less exhibitions all over the world and is included in the permanent collections of museums and private collections.`Shoe Is My Middle Name celebrates three decades of art by a legendary graffiti artist, painter, writer, designer and calligrapher. A striking book that offers an overview of his career, showcasing his evolution through a masterful mixture of paintings, murals, poetry, interviews, graphics and insights about his identity as an artist and art itself.

  • Graffiti Alphabets - Street Fonts From Around the World

Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets.

Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from thirty countries to show the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world renowned such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa), and Hera (Germany); others are lesser known or only now starting to emerge.

Each artist received the same instructions: design all twenty- six letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them, and the results encompass not just street art but sketches, sculpture, digital art, and photography.

  • Graffiti Tattoo Vol.2

Survey of international artists that merge these two vivid art forms: graffiti art and tattoo. Documenting the transition that graffiti writers are increasingly making into the tattoo world, this is #2 in this definitive series. Since the 70s, graffiti artists have made the leap to become muralists, fashion designers, art directors, and now late tattoo artists. Similar to the graffiti movement, in which the artists battle with one another in the public eye to be the best and most respected, the same competitive spirit holds within the tattoo world. These tattoos are a language filled with graffiti style burners and characters that are a departure from the standard tribal design and sailor styles. While the first book allowed a rare glimpse into this movement, this much larger successor provides a full-blown compendium of these fantastic burners on skin. Includes the work of Blen167, Chucho, Franz Jager, Kaves, Jason Kundell, Logan, Norm, Sabe, and many others.

  • Magic City The Art of the Street

Our MAGIC CITY is a place and a non-place. It is not the physical city of brick and mortar but rather the urban space of internalized meanings. It is the city as subject and canvas, neither theme park nor stage set, but an exhibition showcasing more than 40 of the most original and celebrated artists working on and in the city today.

This is a celebration of the universal character of cities as well as a love letter to their infinite diversity. Cities have been designed to facilitate work, but artists have transformed them into playgrounds for the imagination and ideas. This is the invitation called outside our window by friends and strangers with restless spirits: come out and play.

MAGIC CITY –The Art in the Streets features the work of: AIKO, AKRylonumérik, Andy K, Asbestos, Benuz, Jens Besser, Biancoshock, Mark Bode, Bordalo II, Ori Carino & Benjamin Armas, Henry Chalfant, Martha Cooper, Isaac Cordal, Daze, Brad Downey, Tristan Eaton, Ron English, Shepard Fairey , FINO'91, Ganzeer, Anders Gjennestad, Ben Heine, HERAKUT, Icy & Sot, Leon Keer, Loomit, MadC, OAKOAK, Odeith, OLEK , Qi Xinghua, Replete, ROA, Jaime Rojo, Skewville, SpY, Truly, Juandres Vera, WENU, Dan Witz, Yok & Sheryo and Ernest Zacharevic.

  • Glorious Attitude

There’s no glory without attitude. And so Wholetrain Press opens a new editorial era to improve the depth of the Glorious project, taking it to the next level: ATTITUDE. If Glorious was an overview of work from the most active Italian (and not) trainbombers, Glorious ATTITUDE instead is a series of special monographic-books dedicated to the most worthy exponents of the made-in-Italy graffiti world. ATTITUDE is also a report documented through exclusive pics and statements which, chapter after chapter, create a sort of personal diary. Somehwere between déjà vu and sensations to which only those who have spent nights in rail yards can relate, Glorious ATTITUDE accompanies a continuously evolving phoenomenon, focusing on its main characters one at a time, in order to express every trainbomber’s subculture. The first book in the series comes from the ML’S crew and features Cook, an eclectic monster of the commuter-battle who has been for years setting on fire the northern Italy lines in particular. He is a character in a class of his own and as real a writer as they come. ATTITUDE offers a cross section made of pure style, lettering, colour and steel. Merry trainspotting to everybody.

  • Graffiti A New York

In 1973, graffiti ran rampant in NYC, reaching its peak that summer. The work of black writers from the Bronx like SUPER COOL 223, RIFF 70 (WORM/CASH), and PHASE 2 defined the art which the kids called Top-to- Bottom or T-to-B, as it vertically covered a full subway car. Some T-to-B pieces were so elaborate and complex that the NYT hypothesized that they were a collaboration between professional artists and the graffiti writers. Here are photos from that heady era.

  • Schwarz auf Weiss Vol.2 - Style Needs No Color

Style Needs No Color works on the notion that excessive colors and flashy techniques should not be used to repair a weak foundation. They believe that artwork should be able to stand alone without unnecessary distractions and therefore SNNC artists restrict their palette to black and white. In the follow-up release to their successful first book, Schwarz auf Weiss II, you can see the stark beauty and striking simplicity of this idea in action. Since their first title, the SNNC collaboration has expanded significantly, manifesting itself in a series of noteworthy exhibitions, live-painting shows, installations and streetwear collaborations across the world. SNNC has invited a diverse range of international artists from their growing network to contribute black and white, illustrations, vector graphics, street art and graffiti styles to this impressive publication.

  • Dishu

The first survey on contemporary calligraphic practices in Chinese public spaces. This photographic essay traces the roots of this hand writing phenomenon and its development in Chinese society and analyses in detail the do-it-yourself writing tools specially designed for street lettering Thousands of anonymous street calligraphers operate daily in Chinese parks and streets. The endlessly tracing texts composed of «hanzi» signs slowly disappear as water evaporates. This phenomenon, called «dishu» (earth writing or practicing ephemeral calligraphy on the ground using clear water as ink), appeared in the beginning of the 1990s in a north Beijing park and soon spread to most major Chinese cities. Based on classic Chinese literature, poetry or aphorisms, these monumental letterings, ranging from static and regular to highly cursive styles, make the whole body break into spontaneous dance and infinite formal renewals. This street calligraphic practice corresponds to both a socializing need and an individual search for self accomplishment or improvement. «Dishu: Ground Calligraphy in China» is the first survey on contemporary calligraphic practices in Chinese public spaces, documented during the summer of 2011 in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang. It takes the form of a major pho- tographic essay, which traces the roots of this hand writing phenomenon and its development in Chinese society, analyses in detail the do-it-yourself writing tools specially designed for street lettering and explores its possible transposition into other writing cultures. 320 pages

  • The G-Word

Design and Production of Jacob Kimvalls Ph.D Thesis The G-Word : virtuosity and violation negotiating and transforming graffiti

“Why does the CIA praise graffiti as a colorful symbol of the optimism and hope of the Western World while officials in many cities describes the same phenomenon as a criminal activity and a representation of unsafety and social problems?

Graffiti is a word used to denote a complex system of actions and things, which is often described as a singular phenomenon. Graffiti has been understood and evaluated in many ways, often opposing each other. Graffiti may therefor both be evoked as one of the most influential art movements on the planet, and dismissed as something that destroys private property and turns a neighborhood into slum. It is hailed as a modern day childhood adventure and denounced as gang related criminality.
In his Ph.D. thesis The G-Word, art historian and former graffiti writer Jacob Kimvall studies different ways of describing and framing graffiti in four historical and cultural contexts: The graffiti writing on the Berlin wall; the Zero Tolerance on graffiti in Stockholm during the 1990s; The interactions between subcultural graffiti and the cultural and commercial interest of the institutional art world in the 1970s and 80s; The collecting, organizing and publishing of images by graffiti enthusiasts.
The G-Word visualize how different institutions, public and commercial interests have acted to influence and affect the understanding of graffiti as both art, crime and a broad socio-cultural phenomenon.”

  • Future/Memory

Future/Memory is a book about the exhibition with the same name, organized in Dresden, Germany at HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts Dresden, during the summer of 2013.

The book shows the nature of the work of artists like Boogie, Martha Cooper, Cody Hudson and Horfée - artists that all stems from, and get their inspiration from street culture and urban environment.

The artists express their creativity in different techniques and on different subjects. Wasted objects lying in the street are turned into sculptures; images of children playing in the Bronx are transformed into timeless testimonies of the 1980s. Graffiti are converted into abstract and conceptual art, and a blank wooden wall becomes a contemporary vision of an archaic altar.
Future/Memory condenses images of the past and the future taken from human urban surroundings and enlightens the importance of the artistic dialogues, their gestures and energy of street life.
Most of the exhibited works were created on site, ranging from painting, photography, sculpture, installations and conceptual art.

Future/Memory is an innovative and exciting dialogue between street culture and contemporary art featuring some of the most internationally renowned artists and photographers.

The artists featured in Future/Memory are Boogie, Martha Cooper, Horfée, Cody Hudson, HuskMitNavn, Cleon Peterson, Jay “One” Ramier, Skki and SuperBlast

Writing text messages in public spaces has been a unique art form and a means of communication between humans for thousands of years. Many street artists work only with text, written messages or poems, and not necessarily with colourful murals, styles, tags and logos. Street Messages is the first publication that delivers a deep insight into this literary form of expression in the world of global street art.
Street Messages offers a historic background to written messages in public spaces and introduces more than 80 artists from across the world who work exclusively or partly with text. The vast body of information, numerous exclusive quotes and words of wisdom makes Street Messages the first book to shed some light on this as yet undocumented form of street art culture.

Features artwork by Banksy, Dolk, Ben Eine, Faith 47, Flint, Kid Acne, Know Hope, Mobstr, Skki and many more.

  • Cause We Got Style!

Posing is the art of self-expression. It comprises appearance, fashion, accessories and the art of arranging the body or face in a good pose. Cause We Got Style! is a collection of early European hip hop pose photos.

Information about the new American youth culture was still hard to come by, and the youths of Europe had to work out their own ways. Together with graffiti, breakdance, rapping and djing, clothes and attitude were the means of expression. You had to be innovative and use what was available, add details and make your own accessories in orderto stand out and look fresh!

Most of the photos in Cause We Got Style! are snapshots taken by kids on their way to a concert, next to a freshly painted graffiti piece, in the street or in the bedroom. The result is as charming as it is revealing. This is a glimpse into a very private photo album, dusted off after years of lying around in the closet.

Cause We Got Style! shows photos of unknown teenagers as well as now well-known artists like Goldie, Mode 2, Can 2 and Bando. It contains texts by Akim “Zebster” Walta, D.D.Fresh, Queen Hanifa, Mr Puppet and Dan Tikaret among others.

An astonishing document of the early days of European hip hop!

  • From The Platform 2 Book

This is a nostalgic, visual account of the best time and place to be a graffiti writer. In the 1980s, brothers Kenny, a.k.a. KEY, and Paul, a.k.a. CAVS, immersed themselves in the graffiti scene in the Boogie Down Bronx, dutifully photographing hundreds of pieces on now-discontinued MTA subway cars and capturing their proud comrades before, during, and after the act. “Bombing” “White Elephants” with their pilot markers and documenting them with their cameras, which they always carried, they were on the ride of their lives―until 1989, when the last painted train was removed from service. Tags by names like QUIK, IZTHEWIZ, and many others appear here in color exposures, and dozens of artists share stories and drop knowledge with no filter. A foreword by graffiti historian Henry Chalfant, coproducer of Style Wars―the seminal documentary on New York graffiti and hip-hop culture―kicks things off.d cover

  • Graffiti Kings New York City Mass Transit Art Of The 1970's

Graffiti Kings is the definitive book on New York's subway graffiti movement, an unprecedented creative explosion that occurred across the five boroughs during the 1970s. This rare, firsthand account of the birth of this movement is the first and only graffiti book to reveal what happened behind the scenes when writers put their lives on the line to grab a piece of fame from a faceless urban landscape.

Through personal interviews and over 275 full-color, previously unpublished photographs, the colorful origins of subway graffiti are brought to life. Legends such as Taki 183, Blade 1, Phase 2, and Co-Co 144, as well as the city officials who saw the writers as public menaces and their art as vandalism, give accounts of everyday struggles, each full of new advancements, excitement, and risk. Although author and photographer Jack Stewart maintained a low profile at the time, his work is now a graffiti-world legend: rumored to exist, seldom seen, a near-equivalent to the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Alongside archival photographs of everything from vibrant bubble-letter and 3-D pieces to the Holy Grail, the whole-train pieces, are maps, images, and ephemera that help fill out the complete story. A celebration in words and pictures of graffiti's golden age, Graffiti Kings is a book sure to be coveted by those fascinated and inspired by this uniquely American urban art form.

Fifth volume of our collection WASTED TALENT, devoted to the artist Zeky.
    16 x 23 cm / 160 pages / full color / hard cover / french & english [2006]

Zeky was born in 1975 and lives in Montreuil; Paris. He went to school at nearby Gobelins and has been an artist since the day he was born. He began to paint graffiti at the end of the 80s. At the beginning of the 90s, he joined the OC (Outlaw Crew). Since then, he’s been a member of the MCZ collective (Montreuil City Zulus) and the VBA (Vaughn Bodé Addicts) founded by Orus at the end of the 90s. During a career spanning some 18 years of diurnal and nocturnal activities, Zeky has acquired irrefutable technical prowess, but his rich, spontaneous style – he very rarely modifies or polishes his work – is what singles him out. Zeky’s obsession with probing the limits of his art is evident in his work and, inspired by his New York predecessors, his style varies constantly depending on his inspiration. At the onset of his career, Zeky was particularly gifted with characters, but as time went by, he became renowned for a distinctive lettering style that will be forever associated with his tags. Zeky the artist is also in constant evolution; and this is obvious when you look at the techniques he has conquered over the years: tags; throw-ups; chromes and burns, Zeky has mastered them all.

Cosmonometry is his relentless research in letter geometry. Trough over 400 visuals and essays on his arts, the artist gives us the full generosity of his art. The reflections of prestigious contributors such as Skeme, Oeno, Cope2 or Jay1, amongst others, emphasize his own words. Diksa: “Pro176 doesn’t follow the Hype, rather staying away from it. He is more interested in creating his own dimension, where heroes, super villains, creatures, wizards and witches mingle together.” Or furthermore, David Pluskwa: “Today, his deconstructions, dislocations and surprising acrylic transformations place him in the lineage of Roy Lichtenstein or Gudmundur Erró. To this day, he is one of his most renowned successors. All texts are in French and English. First Pro176’s monography 21 x 29,7 cm / 256 pages / Full color / Hard cover / French – English [2014]

  • Uptown & Downtown

New York graffiti writers who cut their teeth painting trains in the ’70s and ’80s transfer Old Skool street art to a more permanent, collectible medium in this book, using transit maps, instead of subway cars, as canvases. GHOST, T-KID, QUIK, REVOLT, BLADE, SHAME125, COPE2, SKEME, and others decorated ordinary 23″ × 32″ MTA maps with their personal tags and graphics echoing the heyday of New York train graffiti. Sixteen sections, one for each writer, feature a total of more than 100 maps, as well as brief statements about the painters’ artistic evolution and style. Like a dynamic “piece book,” or sketchbook, this collection is an exclusive sampling of the painters’ signature strokes and tags in portable form. In fact, many of the artists featured here have used subway-map art as a springboard from the fleeting genre of train-tagging to the sturdier platform of the international art gallery circuit.

NYC graffiti art, heavy metal, comic books, and fantasy art intersect here in Louie “KR.ONE” Gasparro’s visual autobiography. Gaze at this modern Renaissance man’s work from 1977 to the present, and trace his evolution from his adolescent days watching bombed subway cars whirring by in a KOLORSTORM, to the underground period tagging trains and evading cops, to his legal works and whole–school buses. Starting with a scrapbook-like photo collection from Louie’s youth and his other career as drummer of several heavy metal bands, the book moves on with elaborate sketches from the artist’s blackbooks, and colorful concert posters and album covers. • Chaz Bojorquez

Legendary artist Chaz Bojo—rquez is a student of the world and an American treasure all at once. In this stunning monograph, Boj—orquez’s artistic progression is revealed one decade at a time, beginning in the 1970s. His early interest in Los Angeles’s native ‘Cholo’ style graffiti writing was later tempered by his work in Asian calligraphy and his studies at Chouinard Art Institute. As the book unfolds through the decades, the diversity and range of Bojo—rquez’s work becomes evident: street graffiti, paintings, logos, type intensive graphic design work and forays into cinema and fashion are all executed to the highest level. The illustrations are accompanied by fascinating stories about how Chaz started as an artist and includes an in-depth interview with Amanda Erlanson. Los Angeles art critic Peter Frank also contributes an essay in the telling of this artist’s fascinating life story.

  • Rubin: New York/Scandinavia Book

Tony Rubin Sjöman is one of Sweden’s leading contemporary street artists. The art book Rubin: New York / Scandinavia showcases his large scale geometrical murals and brings you to the New York City expat’s studio in Brooklyn. It is a book about art but also about contrasts: beauty versus ugliness, grief versus resolution, the metropolis versus the wilderness.

Tony Rubin Sjöman grew up in a Finnish immigrant home in Gothenburg, Sweden. Today he resides in New York City, where his signature murals can be seen all over the city, from gritty factory walls in the Bronx, to churches in Brooklyn and upscale shopping districts in Manhattan – all bind together by his abstract patterns, reminiscent of Scandinavian design and the brutal architecture of the housing project where he grew up.

Rubin was nine years old when he wrote his first tag. Surrounded by grey concrete and tram tunnels, the walls whispered his name. He grabbed a spray can and set out on a journey that he’s still on today. The move to New York altered his perspective and allowed him to work in a more tolerant environment than that of Gothenburg, where the zero tolerance policy against graffiti has long been the norm. Rubin deconstructed his form of expression, discarded the lettering and perfected his shapes, hence creating a unique aesthetic that carries the art form beyond its boundaries. Rubin’s art is about beauty and grief, alienation, struggle, balance, energy, the cityscape versus wilderness and the notion of class. It’s about a child’s fascination with a magical art form.

“I’m inspired by the contrast between New York City and the wilderness of Lapland, where I have spent the summer months ever since I was a child. Finnish design, such as Marimekko textiles and Alvar Aalto mugs were pretty much basic household items in Finnish working class homes when I was a child but it wasn’t until much later that I learned about architecture and the likes of Eero Saarinen, Alvar Aalto and Matti Suuronen, and they have all inspired my work. I’m also inspired by the almost Neo-futuristic concrete surroundings of Bergsjön, the neighborhood where I grew up, and that I used to consider ugly – the patterns on the balconies, the shapes of the concrete at the tram stops and the water tower that is shaped like a giant UFO.

While Rubin's abstract and geometrical pieces are rooted in traditional graffiti, they break the rules of the craft with their muted color palette and Scandinavian clean lines. The bookRubin: New York / Scandinavia takes you inside his studio, to art galleries and on a journey through the streets of New York City.

RUBIN: New York / Scandinavia is published by Dokument Press, a market leader in the field of quality books on urban culture and street art for more than 15 years.

Texts by Björn Almqvist, the author of several books on graffiti including Writers United and Graffiti Burners.

  • Forms Of Rocking

"The idea of style and competing for the best style is the key to all forms of rockin'." – Style Wars, 1983. Are subcultures, like graffiti, floating free in their own space, or are they connected to the rest of society? In Forms of Rockin’, graffiti styles are connected to graphic design and other popular culture expressions such as music, fashion, photography, industrial design and movies for the first time. Anssi Arte analyses some of the most powerful visual symbols of the 1970s, 80s and 90s and compares design, typography and graffiti styles. The visual styles of James Brown, Blade Runner, the Memphis group and grunge music all appear together with classic fonts and graffiti writers. The clear yet analytical narrative and carefully crafted visualizations make it appealing to both graphic design aficionados as well as graffiti enthusiasts. But Forms of Rockin’ is more than that. This is a must for everybody interested in contemporary popular culture and design history. Forms of Rockin' traces and defines the stylistic conventions in graffiti letterforms that have become iconic and globally acknowledged ideals. From the early New York tags to the mid-1990s ugly-fresh styles of Scandinavia, Forms of Rockin’ tells the story of how popular culture and graffiti styles influences each other.

  • Graffiti Murals

Six case studies, conducted in New York City, Trenton, and Jersey City, explore how graffiti murals are created and what role they play in cities where buffing illegal graffiti is a lucrative business. The author interviewed people affected on a daily basis by the murals at sites around the metropolitan area, including property owners who have welcomed the muralists in hopes that the artwork would serve as a deterrent to vandalism—and provide a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to buffing. This analysis, informed by cultural Marxism and supported by street photography, suggests a radical departure from traditional New York City policy: instead of spending money exclusively on the elimination of illegal graffiti, resources should also be devoted to the creation of graffiti murals. In the end, graffiti removal teams and mural promoters are pursuing the same goal: making the city a more visually appealing place.

  • From The Platform Book

See the New York City transit system at a time the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has tried hard to forget. In the early ’80s, graffiti writer Paul Cavalieri, who writes “CAVS,” was drawn to the colorful tags on trains. He started learning train schedules so he could snap works by many writers of the time. This is a compilation of subway graffiti from 1983 to 1989, when the MTA announced that its fleet was entirely graffiti-free. More than 325 color photos capture everything from motion-bombed train interiors riddled with pilot marker tags to epic works covering whole exteriors, top to bottom. Artists tell their tales of adventure throughout and reminisce about working on live third rails, navigating the complex subway system to find their works, and witnessing graffiti’s gradual disappearance from the trains. Santiago, with its deeply evolved and extremely active underground graffiti scene, bursts at the seams with an abundance of eye-popping, jaw-dropping murals. Stencil graffiti artist Lord K2 documents 14 neighborhoods within the capital of Chile with his arresting photography and intimate conversations with local artists. Through more than 200 images and 80 interviews, learn how street art was influenced by American, European, and Brazilian graffiti and how its evolution runs parallel to the political history of the nation itself. During the Cold War, nationalist muralist brigades spread socialist idealism through symbols of power and oppression. • Don1 The King From Queens

Among the famous graffiti artists from New York City’s 1970s subway era was an unassuming talent from the unassuming borough of Queens. The Italian-American rock and roller who wrote “DON 1 MAFIA” blasted onto the scene like a meteorite out of nowhere. His influence on this art form transcended the inner city and he became a legend and a household name. But his descent from the top of this name game, a result of the hedonistic lifestyle of New York City at the time, was just as swift, and for years DON1 has lived in obscurity. Fortunately, as a photographer studying at the prestigious school of Art and Design, DON1 documented his iconic work, along with that of his well known contemporaries, using his trusted 35mm camera. This penetrating work takes the reader inside the supernova that was DON1′s creative life with nearly 200 never before seen graffiti photos of the most undocumented NYC train lines and an even rarer glimpse at work from his black book.

  • The Art Of The Mural Vol.1

This firstinstallment in a four-part series is a celebratory tour of some of the mostvibrant, impressive, contemporary mural art in the world. Fifty artistsfrom six continents share nearly 400 examples of their best work and a littlebit about their own lives and journeys as muralists. The criteria for inclusionin the book was simple: the artists had to be full-time muralists who push theboundaries of the art form and engage with the medium as a vital social concept. Many of these artists don’t have homes; they travel the globe, entering foreigncommunities and cultures, and find shelter from hosts of festivals or artlovers. It’s this dedication to their craft that sets this breed of artistsapart from traditional artists, such as painters and sculptors, but their levelof commitment is also what bridges the worlds of fine art and street art.

  • Broken Windows (Graffiti NYC)

254 pages, hardcover. Broken Windows - Graffiti NYC documents the flowering of the graffiti movement of the post-train era, and this newly revised 2010 edition has been completely redesigned with 70 more pages and many new photographs. In the 1980's graffiti was pushed out of the subways as the trains were cleaned once and for all. In the 1990's, much of the graffiti action in New York migrated to the city's walls, enabling the 'writers' to execute more refined and concept-driven large-scale pieces. By the end of decade, this new medium was being used to great effect. Photographers James & Karla Murray took great pains to faithfully capture an unprecedented re-birth of the movement, documenting the most significant murals created between 1996 - 2001. Broken Windows contains insightful interviews, an extensive selection of women s' graffiti, and features the work of more than 180 artists from The United States, Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Holland, Italy, and Norway.

  • Blade - King of Graffiti

BLADE has already told his life story through graffiti. Now, more than forty years into his career and armed with an incredible memory, BLADE sits down with Chris Pape to reflect on growing up in the Bronx in the turbulent 1970s, and recounts the highs and lows of his storied career, holding nothing back. BLADE is considered “The King of Graffiti” because, by 1980, after painting 5,000 wildly creative trains, he stopped counting. This book parallels the New York graffiti movement almost from its inception, moving through its glory years in the mid-1970s, when BLADE earned his title, and ending in the global art scene, where he remains a major presence. BLADE helped New York graffiti become internationally famous by making it look fun, and, for reasons of quantity, quality, and, perhaps above all, for sheer spirit, BLADE may very well be the most popular graffiti artist with his peers. • World of Urban Decay

Arresting art photography takes the curious into the depths of worlds that normally remain hidden behind gardens overrun with wild vegetation and tall fences blazoned with “Keep Out!” signs. Photographer Martin ten Bouwhuijs’s regular urban exploration missions throughout Western Europe have culminated in this collection of haunting images made in abandoned hospitals, morgues, monasteries, power plants, schools, factories, swimming pools, and castles. Each location is described in a brief history. Capturing the venues in various states of neglect, these photographs reveal remnants of once-habitable spaces: from furniture still in place but covered in thick dust to dramatic vaulted ceilings speckled in mold and water stains to walls that have given way in complete disrepair. More than 150 dramatic images continually heighten anticipation by showing long views down empty corridors and wide views of rooms with doors that lead elsewhere – you never really know what you are going to see around the next corner.
Author: Martin ten Bouwhuijs started urban exploration after seeing a TV news report on the subject. He went to his first factory the next day. He lives in the Netherlands.

  • Walls & Frames - Fine Art from the Street

    210 Pages, full color, hardcover.

Street art has firmly established itself as a facet and attitude in the landscape
of contemporary art. Today, young artists are going beyond their work on the streets to present their innovative styles in galleries. They are aspiring to follow in the footsteps of stars of the scene such as Shepard Fairey, Faile, and Os Gêmeos, who have already exhibited their work in renowned museums including the Tate Modern and Fondation Cartier. Walls & Frames documents the work of this next generation of street artists. The book presents the evolution of these ambitious talents, who are keeping their connection to the street alive while establishing themselves in the art market with work in traditional formats such as painting, sculpture, installation, and prints. It shows how artists who work with limited time and a small selection of tools on the street are developing other styles, concepts, and techniques in the studio that are, in turn, influencing the direction of contemporary art. Interviews with the artists and other insiders as well as an insightful text by the curator Maximiliano Ruiz illuminate the context, working methods, and perspectives involved in this inspiring scene. Walls & Frames takes a detailed and authentic look at the intersection of young street art and contemporary art. Its fresh outlook appeals to those familiar with these developments and new to the scene as well as to a wide
range of artists, collectors, gallerists, journalists, and designers. The book presents current work by artists from around the world including AJ Fosik, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Alexone, Amose, Andrew McAttee, Anthony Lister, Axel Void, Ben Frost, Blek le Rat, Bom-K, Boris Hoppek, Calma, Conor Harrington, Dan Witz, Dave Kinsey, Dixon, Docteur Gecko, Doze Green, Dran, Eelus, Eine, Elbow Toe, Evol, Fefe Talavera, Gaia, George Morton, Herakut,

208 pages, hardcover- Urban Iran is a depiction of everyday life apart from international and diplomatic policies, giving voice to people living and working in Iran today while probing the complexities of contemporary Iran. Described and revealed by photographers, writers and visual artists, from street art to heavy metal bands and book publishing, Urban Iran documents how the Western media gaze influences how much of the world views Iran, but also how this gaze impacts how Iranians see themselves, especially in the realm of the creative arts.

Novelist Salar Abdoh relays how his adventures driving a Puegot 206 hatchback in and around Tehran were emblematic of a ''split in the personality of the country . . . what makes Iran so difficult to describe to non-Iranians''; Tehran-based photographer and designer Karan Reshad offers images of markets and the country's burgeoning graffiti scene, most notably the work of A1ONE; articles from the magazine Bidoun delve into Tehran's largest housing complex, Iranian facial hair trends and the country's underground heavy metal scene; Charlotte Noruzi's personal stories about the effects of her childhood books remain with her today, resulting in her exploration of the current state of publishing and illustration in Iran today.

  • Urban Guerrilla Protest

134 pages, hardcover- Urban Guerrilla Protest showcases the ways and means of individual, subversive protest actions. Featuring over 90 artists and initiatives from around the world, the book provides insights into the resources that are being used to place activist messages in the heart of the everyday, documenting the rise of the media-guerrilla during the decade spanning 1995-2005. All over the world, activists have disseminated their messages using an array of methods targeted to grab the attention of the public, as well as the perpetrators of the actions that have instigated the protestors. Berlin-based graphic designer Ake Rudolf has compiled an international collection of successful and poignant actions; its design and bilingual English/German layout is an homage to the Do It Yourself attitude that all of the examples champion in the name of questioning corporate hegemony. Examinations of Reverend Billy, the Yes Men, The Institute for Applied Autonomy, The Billboard Liberation Front, The Ruckus Society, Yomango, Surveillance Camera Players and more than 90 other examples from all over the US, UK, Australia, China, Argentina and elsewhere illuminate how these messages are heard, and in many cases incite change.

Under the Bridge: The East 238th Street Graffiti Hall Of Fame
    by Paul Cavalieri

Join Paul “Cavs” Cavalieri on a journey through graffiti history and the evolution of a major cultural landmark. In this account, Cavs shares his experiences under the Bronx’s East 238th Street bridge, which over the years has become a Bronx “Graffiti Hall of Fame,” through an astonishing, lifelong photographic diary. From the late 1950s to the 1990s, graffiti artists would congregate here to express themselves by unleashing their creative ENERGY. In this adopted home away from home, generations of graffiti artists formed bonds as well as rivalries. Take in four decades’ worth of work from prolific artists including Boots119, Sent, and Sien5. Also represented are graffiti writers from the Woodlawn and Wakefield neighborhoods, connected by the famous concrete viaduct built between 1929 and 1931, as well as unique and personal insights into successive generations of crews, such as a recent, major contributor from Matilda Avenue.

Turfizm: The Selected Works of Jean ''Turf One'' Labourdette, focuses on some of the intricate so-called ''pop surrealist'' works that reflect Turf's acute attention to character detail, and an almost playful fascination with life and death. 112 pages, Hardcover: Roger Gastman has created more books on graffiti culture than anyone. He's edited and published countless artist monographs and anthologies and even served as Supervising Producer for the film documentary Infamy.

For Tools of Criminal Mischief, Mr. Gastman has trawled his personal archive to present the quirky stories and visual oddities that inspire him personally: from the story of infamous Baltimore Graffiti Writer SHAKEN, to 1940s hobo train art, 70s gang graffiti, photos of graffiti writers personal aerosol arsenals, spray paint collectibles and ephemera and more.

In the author's own words:  "The danger, history, process, spray cans, magic markers, and the local styles are just a few parts of graffiti that I fixate on. Different aspects interest me at different times, but what always continues to excite me is the oddity especially pedestrian graffiti and the strange pop-culture references".

In This Means Nothing, his first book, Le Bijoutier chronicles these works in sticker, chalk, marker, stencil, wheat paste poster, painting, and even sculpture, revealing a new direction in public destruction for the sake of aesthetic construction. • Street Renegades - New Underground Art

128 pages- Graffiti and street art have been at the heart of visual subcultures for the past thirty years. However, as time progresses the new wave of artists are moving in fresh directions. Corporate giants have been quick to jump on the graffiti bandwagon, perceiving it as a shortcut to youth culture. Even street stickers have been highjacked by the multinationals for advertising.Frustrated by wholesale corporate theft of the scene, the latest generation of street artists are employing different techniques in their work, different means of dissemination, different materials, different ways of getting their work noticed. Using the detritus of the urban environment—advertising, fly-tipped rubbish, street signs—the new scene is subverting the streetscape in 3D to shock, educate, and entertain. This book documents the new graffiti with photographs of the work and interviews with major players around the world.

But to the children who grew up there, the abandoned buildings and rubble-strewn lots made perfect playgrounds, providing raw materials and open space for unsupervised play. A crumbling tenement housed a secret clubhouse, rooftops became private aviaries, and a pile of trash might be a source for treasure.

  • Still On and Non The Wiser

144 Pages, Paperback- Until recently, art made in the street and art made within the institution had mutually excluded each other. Graffiti writers have mastered their medium like modern painters but because it did not emerge from a studio it was not considered to be ''real art'' by the critics. Still On, a catalog of a street art exhibition by the Von Der Heydt Museum Wuppertal in Barmen, Germany-, makes the case for graffiti as contemporary art. Beyond notions of vandalism and interventions in public space, graffiti and street art is a dialog between artists and their immediate environment. This exhibit examines how each artist responds to the confines of the Ruhmenshalle Gallery and how the vitality of their work translates successfully to the museum with out losing any of its power or integrity. With works on canvas, installation and painting directly on the gallery walls by Tasek, OS GEMEOS, Herbert Baglione, TILT, MISS VAN, Mirko Reisser, Pius Portman, Stohead, ZEVS Daniel Man, and Heiko Zahlman.

Soviet Ghosts is an urban exploration behind the former Iron Curtain by photographer Rebecca Litchfield. Reaching from Eastern Germany through Ukraine, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Mother Russia to even the despair of crumbling Chernobyl, these photographs deliver a compelling narrative of both moral bankruptcy and flawed ideology. Featuring stunning imagery throughout, Litchfields road-trip through the former USSR breathes a new life into these forgotten places and finds a cold beauty in their post-apocalyptic decay. • Protest Graffiti Mexico - Oaxaca

160 pages, hardcover- On October 27 2006, when Mexican police opened fire on a crowd of protesters in the city of Oaxaca, killing three people, including American journalist Brad Roland Will, the world became aware of a social conflict that at its core was about the right to an education. Within hours of these shootings, graffiti calling the region's governor a murderer was sprayed throughout the city. Unlike in other cities where graffiti is recognized as a form of public art, in Oaxaca, graffiti became a way of achieving social justice through community organization. And because teachers in Mexico are primarily women, the graffiti is very much inspired and made by women. Shot by Elaine Sendyk in 2007, the photographs in this book depict oppression, empowerment and the messages of struggle and revolt.

This book illustrates graffiti, painting, sculpture, mosaics and cartoons. Today, the underground labyrinths are plagued by illicit explorers who leave elaborate art behind. Their work is showcased alongside that of some international fellow travelers including NICK WALKER, THE YOK, SHERYO and KRAM. The book features hundreds of pieces of art by 46 different artists. The well-photographed works are accompanied by the artists musings on New York, street art and their own work and processes. This work is non-permanent and necessarily current and relevant. In Outdoor Gallery New York resident and author Yoav Litvin successfully documents the zeitgeist.

  • Olivier Stak book

62 pages, hardcover- Olivier Stak discovered graffiti during a trip to London in 1987. He painted his first graff in 1988 in Paris with Colorz. From 1988 to 1994, he worked at defining his style, writing on the walls of major European cities. The founder of WorldSigns, a quarterly review devoted to the art of graffiti, Olivier Stak, is undeniably rooted in urban expression (tag and graff). In 1995 he converted his signature into a logo and began to work with a variety of materials ranging from neons to stickers. This book features a selection of interventions completed between 1988 and 2004 in the city or in galleries and just as graffiti has been erased, the majority of the works presented in this book no longer exist.

  • Morris Park Crew The Official History

No other graffiti crew from New York City’s graffiti heyday conjures up more images of angel dust-smoking, beer-drinking, “crazy white boys,” than the Bronx-born-and-bred writing group Morris Park Crew (MPC). This official history of the crew tells the stories behind the group with never-before-published photos, oral histories from MPC members, and details on the 2009-2010 MPC revival. Starting in 1977, when founding members Slip, Wedge, and Speed started the crew, this account continues with details of how Cap 1 took over and led the crew down its unforgettable path in the 1980s. With a penchant for going to war with rival graffiti crews for train space and territory, which in turn led to the largest city-wide cross-out campaign, the MPC was known as a bunch of thugs who beat, hung, and shot perceived rivals and a group of talent-less “toys.” Wrapped up in this raw tell-all about the bad boys of NYC graffiti, are not just accounts of the crew’s passion for graffiti, but the real-life challenges its young members faced in their urban environment.

  • Like Lipstick Traces

226 pages, hardcover- 13 graffiti writers, 2 years, 600 unpublished Polaroids. Like Lipstick Traces shows the everyday life of 13 graffiti writers. Consciously, and therefore in contrast with usual graffiti publications, it uses the peculiar medium of Polaroid. A Polaroid camera and about one hundred Polaroid photos was sent to well known graffiti writers of different nationalities. The task was to shoot their everyday life with complete freedom in the choice of the motifs. It is that freedom which makes this book so special, but also the fact that all these unpublished photos were taken especially for the book. In the beginning of the 21st century, graffiti seems to be taking a line which is totally against its original motivation. On one hand, this might be caused by more severe penalties, on the other it is due to the increasing incorporation of the media and big business. Thus, the artists presented in this book devote themselves to this art in a committed way. They do not succumb to commercial pressure and they bring new life into the graffiti movement. Artists featured are AROE (UK), C.B.S (DE), DUMBO (IT), HONET (FR), KEGR (DK), O CLOCK (FR), OS CURURUS (BR), RATE (USA), REMIO (NOR), ROCKY (ES), SCAN (CA), SMASH (CH), THE E.R.S (BE).

  • Graffiti and Street Art

The traditional letter-based writing that appeared on the streets of Philadelphia and New York over forty years ago has evolved into two distinct disciplines. While both thrive illegally and challenge the concept of public space, the new wave of street art puts greater emphasis on figures, abstraction, symbols and formal techniques.

This incisive and highly readable survey traces the evolution of graffiti and street art and explores the motivations and practices of the leading exponents. Terms and language are examined in detail – from tags and throwies to culture jamming and subvertising – along with their many influences and genres.

Uniquely, Graffiti and Street Art analyses not just the work, but the functions of graffiti and street art and their increasingly important role in urban visual culture. The picture that emerges is a rich celebration of two of the defining art movements of the twenty-first century.

Anna Wacławek began researching graffiti and street art in the late 1990s, travelling extensively in Canada and the USA as well as Japan, China, Poland, Germany, the UK, France and Spain to conduct first-hand analysis. She holds several professional qualifications in art history and currently works at Concordia University, Montreal, in the Department of Art History.

Over 400 eye-popping photos provide a decade-long tour of graffiti in New York City. Walls, trucks, and subway cars are featured with graffiti by the crews X-Men, KD, TNB, 156, RIS, AOK, TC-5, FAME CITY, COD, XTC, TFP, MCI, IF, DYM, 718, TD4, SMART, TATS CRU, FLY-ID, GFR, AKB, and many more.

Because New York City has made a concerted effort to remove graffiti from the city, the images captured here will never be seen again. Walls were repainted and some buildings were demolished, keeping graffiti crews working fast to keep ahead of the trend. The author worked even faster to capture their ephemeral efforts.

  • Five Cities

72 pages, hardcover. These images represent the European cities of Palermo, Istanbul, Budapest, Paris and Berlin through their surface markings. In five sequences of closely related photographs Sinclair takes characteristic features of the urban landscape - the park, the subway station, the street, the cemetery and the bridge - to explore the interaction between a city and its citizens as recorded in graffiti. Yet the visible effects of weather and the passage of time acknowledge the ultimate ephemerality of this human activity, lending the images an elegiac quality and their subject the aspect of a natural process. In this, the second in a trilogy of books to examine the surfaces of European cities, we are invited to look at graffiti anew: not as aggressive intrusions, but rather as part of an ongoing, collaborative transformation of the modern city.

  • Faith 47

Initially recognized for her unique graffiti and street artwork, Faith 47 is a self-taught artist who draws inspiration from her own intuitive political and existential questions. Her art takes on the form of metaphor. Both abstract and definitive in meaning, plucking at our heartstrings in harmonious and sometimes dark tones as she paints.

Faith's images thrive on broken-down cars and old factories, dusty side roads of lost towns and inner-city alleyways. Her deep affinity with lost spaces allows her to gracefully bring attention to the most honest and humble of environments. Her interactions resonate with our fragility and our elusive relationship with dreams, memory, human interaction and urban decay.

Faith has established herself internationally, exhibiting her work in galleries and participating in projects across the globe. Despite this she remains rooted in South Africa, where the soil is red and her blood feels comfortably and peacefully on edge.

  • Erosie (Part of Rebellion 3)

128 pages, softcover. Third edition in this remarkably successful series is devoted to one of the greats of the Dutch and European street art scene, Erosie. Active since 1993, Erosie has developed a totally unique style that in his own words "...looks for parallels between and the nuances of the graffiti-codes, the illustrated image, commercial visual language and the traditions of art..." His goals are to use, confirm, deny or question these fields visually and/or conceptually in the quest to define his own personal visual language, which is a mixture of street art and pop art. He uses humor, mixes graffiti lettering with typography, challenges us with puns and wordplay and his illustrative style is a cross between Edward Gorey and Robert Crumb — think no further than the headless chicken or the two rappers, Jay-Z and Nas, battling it out in cartoon form.

    Hardcover, 160 pages

The first volume is dedicated to the work of the Parisian writer Dize. His ability to draw simple styles and original tags, the diversity in his search for letters and his numerous collaborations in big scenes are reasons to focus on the talented writer. Inevasible and respected by his community, Dize practises both classical and innovative graffiti all at once, keeping the energy and the soul of the 70s pioneers who bombed the New York subway cars. This book details several aspects of his work in 3 parts. The first part, starting from his debut in 1989 to this year, shows his influences and evolution, from his first tags on the school desks to his fresh banging wildstyles. Dize’s important meetings and other events are displayed in full color pictures. The second part is focused on his production since the year 2000. A large and detailed view of his work from the last four years: tags, throw ups, pieces and “work in progress” pictures are commented upon and analysed by Dize and his partners. The last part displays his inside world, sketches, canvases, calligraphic and typographic experiences; a journey through the mind of a writer.

In the past three or four years, Detroit has become a “spraycation” spot for graffiti artists. Formerly known as the automotive capital of the world, the media now refers to the Motor City as a bankrupt ruin—a shadow of its former self. The author has recorded the work produced by these graffiti writers and documented the evolution of Detroit street art culture in more than a dozen neighborhoods in and around this resilient Midwest city between 2008 and 2013. This photographic dossier is the first book to exclusively feature graffiti from Detroit, where one in every five structures is vacant, abandoned, or dilapidated. Beginning in July 2009, the Fondation Cartier will be hosting an exhibition that celebrates street art. The show and the accompanying catalogue first reexamine the birth and evolution of the graffiti movement in New York in the early 1970s, and feature documentation from that time, including press clips and photographs of tags and graffiti by artists such as Lee, Seen, and Lady Pink, among others. The book then explores the explosion of creativity worldwide that followed the New York movement, especially in Paris, which became the nerve center for European graffiti in the 1980s. It juxtaposes the different aesthetics of cities like New York, Paris, London, Berlin, and Sao Paulo, highlighting styles specific to each city and the diverse practices of contemporary artists who began in the graffiti movement. There are interviews with artists who influenced the development of street art and with others, such as gallery owners, who were involved in its evolution.

  • Boris Hoppek Y Sancho Panza

192 pages, hardcover- Boris Hoppek is known as the creator of the Bimbo Dolls series. In addition to humorous new photo installations starring his Bimbos, the book includes a broad selection of Hoppek's fanciful portraits in chalk and spray paint that can be seen in the streets of cities from Barcelona to Berlin. These are supplemented by images of his work on cardboard boxes as well as numerous illustrations and sketches. Rather than approach his art theoretically, Hoppek simply does what he likes to do. This method gives all of his work an aura of childlike authenticity. The combination of amusing motifs and an attractive, handy format make this book an ideal gift.

Hendrick Beikirch, or ECB, is seeking to change our perception of what graffiti is or can be by extending its limits. ECB is a German painter working on large-scale black and white or grayscale murals in public spaces worldwide. This new book is a compilation of the artists work, and provides insight into that work through both interviews and photographs of his process and execution. ECB looks for new approaches and blurs the lines between fine art and graffiti. The scale of his outdoor murals does not take away from the familiarity created in his portraits, often of anonymous faces, making the work accessible to the masses. The astounding scale he works at is made evident in one of his best-known works,  "Where there is no struggle, there is no strength". Located in Busan, South Korea, the mural of a local fisherman is over 20 stories and measures 230 feet, making it Asias tallest mural. Photographs in the book show the work in progress, as well as its context situated against the backdrop of Busans skyscrapers. Blurring Boundaries is an intimate photographic look at ECBs process, body of work and the people who inspire him.

  • Beyond Illustration

200 pages, Hardcover. Topic of this innovative book is the emergence of an exciting new genre of illustration and art. This vivid development is reflected in the intense influx of illustrators to the field of art. The interaction of illustration, art and design is not only most interesting but cannot be avoided as a topic of discussion for anyone who is interested in art and design. In great detail Beyond Illustration presents a significant selection of more than 20 of today’s hottest illustrators and artists from all over the world. The book is showcasing a spellbinding mix of styles ranging from modern to traditional that will attract to professionals and newcomers as well.

Beyond Illustration displays the unique work of these persons and their individual viewpoints concerning this upcoming issue. For many postmodern artists there is a fine line between “illustration” and “art” which even disappears occasionally. The traditional definition for illustration as a service product and art as an autonomous project is less and less maintained as a clear borderline. This fact not only attracts many illustrators to the fields of art but makes you also look at their work as pieces of art. In the US we can clearly observe that more and more pieces of work of traditional illustrators are shown in galleries and at art exhibitions. The same phenomenon can be seen in Europe.

Beyond Illustration discusses all aspects and gives an overview about the trendsetters of the “Scene” and in consideration of the fact it is a must-have, not only for creative professionals and students, but also for artists and anyone who has a sympathy for visual language. This title is the first print-project by the publishers of the ezine castlemagazine. With approximately 30.000 downloads per issue castlemagazine has an undeniable presence in scene and market.

  • Beauty in Decay

192 pages, Hardcover - “Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints.” This is the unspoken rule of urban explorers, who sometimes risk their safety, police records, and even their lives to explore abandoned buildings, sewers and storm drains, transit tunnels, utility tunnels, high-security areas of inhabited buildings, and even catacombs such as those in Paris, Rome, Odessa, and Naples.

Although these urban explorers usually work solo or in small teams, they collectively put forth a ground cry against a modern culture that embraces the new, polished, uniform, and mundane. Urban explorers find the beauty — layers of graffiti by years worth of writers, multi-hued peeling paint, antique objects, someone’s initials left in the dust on a broken stained glass window — and physical manifestations of memory that abandoned, impermanent urban spaces can hold.

Beauty in Decay features the best in full-color, panoramic photographs from urban exploration — or Urbex — around the world. Overgrown industrial complexes, disused lunatic asylums, abandoned palaces and forgotten monasteries are showcased, and paired with clear-sighted, poetic text.

  • Back Jumps - The Live Issue 3

320 pages, paperback- Since 2003, the nationally acclaimed and unique exhibition series BackJumps - The Live Issue has had sensational impact and successes in Berlin. The Backjumps team, built around curator Adrian Nabi, successfully wrapped their third major Live event, in late 2007. While gallery owners and professionals of the culture sector were left rubbing their eyes and the conservative tabloid newspapers elevated the project s profile with cries of scandal, approximately 50,000 enthusiastic art lovers made a pilgrimage to the exhibitions and numerous Backjumps-related side events in Kreuzberg.
BackJumps - Live Issue # 3 , the three-dimensional Live edition of the legendary Backjumps magazine, once again brought the street art scene together to view works of numerous international artists under one roof. In addition to the actual exhibition, several workshops, panel discussions, lectures, urban walks and partner exhibitions took place. Several large scale murals were painted throughout the city under the Backjumps banner and of course, throughout the course of the events, the streets of Berlin were as alive and visual as ever.

All this and much more can be found in the From Here To Fame s newly published 320-page (catalogue-)book, BackJumps - Live Issue # 3 , which, in keeping with former editions, strikes a bold note with its revolutionary design. The book gives the reader an allinclusive tour of the exhibition rooms, describing with brilliant images and thoughtful texts, the work of the 24 artists and projects. Additional information and numerous other works of each individual artist are also found in the extensive artist chapter of the catalogue. With the book s retrospect of Live Issues # 1 and # 2, light is shed on the Backjumps scandal , and the impact that the expositions have had on the Berlin art scene. POET 1 examines the story of the Backjumps magazine, from its humble beginnings to its present day success, while CEMNOZ, CHEECH and DON M. ZAZA elucidate the depths of their style philosophy. Select photographs of the side events, careful documentation of the painted murals and a large chapter on street art that includes more pictures, essays and academic treatises make this volume a must-have for more than just avid lovers of writing and street art.

Her task was not unlike a treasure hunt, involving a series of conspiratorial meetings and the subsequent arrival of mysterious, unmarked packages.

  • Graffiti ist Jazz mit Buchstaben

Sabine Ullrich and Frank Pudel accompanied and studied the graffiti and street art scene in Mid-Germany Area with the photo camera for two years. All portrayed protagonists in this book share the same big passion: painting building facades with spray cans – sometimes socio-critical as a meditative act, sometimes inspired by baroque, spontaneous and artistically innovative or as a rewarded, commissioned piece. In many cases, their artworks are vanished, repainted or weather-beaten in a short time. What remains, is only the photo.
