  4. If You're Reading This, There's Still Time.

Morley is a Los Angeles-based street artist that specializes in bold, typographic posters which he wheat pastes within the urban landscape. Blending humor, hope and his unique perspective on life, Morley's aim is to act as a friendly voice amongst the cacophony of billboarded messages and corporate slogans. This voice was given a face when he began including an image of himself in each of his pieces, looking to create a more intimate relationship between the artist and the audience than many of his anonymous contemporaries could allow. In 2011, Morley's work caught the eye of Steve Lazarides whose Outsiders imprint began selling his work, describing it thusly: "His sympathetic statements give the tirelessly aspirational residents a welcome reminder of what's important in life: love, simple pleasures, making the world a slightly better place and not hating on yourself too much." Today, he continues to paste his work in any city that doesn't enforce their vandalism laws through caning. Also he made us promise to include the fact that he can hold his breath for over an hour, and that if anyone challenged him to a breath holding contest, they would totally lose - but he was probably lying about that.

  8. JR & Art Spiegelman: The Ghosts of Ellis Island

In August 2014 the French artist JR received an unprecedented invitation to work in the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital, a building on the south side of the island that has been abandoned and closed to visitors since 1954. About ten percent of the millions of migrants who passed through Ellis Island, having been deemed not healthy enough to enter the United States, spent some time in the hospital. For Unframed―Ellis Island, documented in The Ghosts of Ellis Island, JR chose about 20 archival photographs of the hospital's patients and staff and wheat-pasted these images around the abandoned building, creating haunting scenes that bring the history of these rooms back to life: a family looking out at the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, a small boy lying on an empty bed frame, patients staring out of the caged "psychopathic" ward. The work, which is accessible by guided tour, will remain up "until it decides to disappear." Along with images of JR's photographic interventions in the hospital, this publication includes new illustrations by legendary cartoonist Art Spiegelman, who collaborated with JR on illustrated narratives about Ellis Island's immigrants.
JR (born 1983) is best known for his monumental, wheat-pasted street portraiture projects. His ongoing project Unframed involves installing archival images and images from anonymous photographers in new contexts. JR has carried out Unframed projects in Marseille, São Paulo, Vevey, Atlanta, Baden Baden and Washington, DC. In 2014 he worked inside the theater of the NYC Ballet creating a 6,500-square-foot composite image of NYCB dancers depicted nearly life-size that, when seen from above, forms a giant eye. JR won the TED Prize for 2011.
Art Spiegelman (born 1948) is an American cartoonist, editor and comics advocate based in New York City, best known for his graphic novel Maus (1991). His work as coeditor on the comics magazines Arcade and Raw has been influential, and he spent a decade as contributing artist for The New Yorkerwhere he made several high-profile and sometimes controversial covers.

  21. Like Lipstick Traces

226 pages, hardcover- 13 graffiti writers, 2 years, 600 unpublished Polaroids. Like Lipstick Traces shows the everyday life of 13 graffiti writers. Consciously, and therefore in contrast with usual graffiti publications, it uses the peculiar medium of Polaroid. A Polaroid camera and about one hundred Polaroid photos was sent to well known graffiti writers of different nationalities. The task was to shoot their everyday life with complete freedom in the choice of the motifs. It is that freedom which makes this book so special, but also the fact that all these unpublished photos were taken especially for the book. In the beginning of the 21st century, graffiti seems to be taking a line which is totally against its original motivation. On one hand, this might be caused by more severe penalties, on the other it is due to the increasing incorporation of the media and big business. Thus, the artists presented in this book devote themselves to this art in a committed way. They do not succumb to commercial pressure and they bring new life into the graffiti movement. Artists featured are AROE (UK), C.B.S (DE), DUMBO (IT), HONET (FR), KEGR (DK), O CLOCK (FR), OS CURURUS (BR), RATE (USA), REMIO (NOR), ROCKY (ES), SCAN (CA), SMASH (CH), THE E.R.S (BE).

  28. Magic City The Art of the Street

Our MAGIC CITY is a place and a non-place. It is not the physical city of brick and mortar but rather the urban space of internalized meanings. It is the city as subject and canvas, neither theme park nor stage set, but an exhibition showcasing more than 40 of the most original and celebrated artists working on and in the city today.

This is a celebration of the universal character of cities as well as a love letter to their infinite diversity. 30. Martha Cooper - Street Play

121 pages, paperback- Martha Cooper's photos take us through the Alphabet City of the late 70's as the area was about to undergo extensive urban renewal a process that is still continuing today. At the time, the neighborhood had more than its share of drug dealers and petty criminals, and the landscape seemed ugly and forbidding. But to the children who grew up there, the abandoned buildings and rubble-strewn lots made perfect playgrounds, providing raw materials and open space for unsupervised play. A crumbling tenement housed a secret clubhouse, rooftops became private aviaries, and a pile of trash might be a source for treasure.

  32. Martha Coopers Subway Art

Another Classic by the Legendary Martha Cooper.

“Many of the images are today iconic masterpieces. . . . One of the most influential art books of its time.” —The Big Issue

In 1984 the groundbreaking Subway Art brought graffiti to the world, presenting stunning photographic documentation of the burgeoning movement in New York. Thirty years later, this bible of street art has been updated with over seventy photographs not included in the original edition and new insights on an incredibly rich period for urban art and its legacy.

In new introductions, authors Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant recall how they gained entry into the New York City graffiti community in the 1970s and 1980s. New afterwords continue the story, tracing the decline of the subway and graffiti scene in the late 1980s to its unexpected rebirth as a global art movement. The authors reveal how the lives of the original subway artists have unfolded and mourn the loss of several to the darker forces of the street.

Prepared in secret under the guise of constructing a movie set for a Hollywood film company filming a crime thriller called “Grey Fox”, the pop-up exhibition at the Tropicana, a disused lido, was clearly a sinister twist on Disneyland, although Banksy denied any relationship to Disney and actually banned Disney associates from the park that opened during the weekend of 21 August 2015, ran 36 days and closed permanently on 27 September 2015.

  37. Morris Park Crew The Official History

No other graffiti crew from New York City’s graffiti heyday conjures up more images of angel dust-smoking, beer-drinking, “crazy white boys,” than the Bronx-born-and-bred writing group Morris Park Crew (MPC). This official history of the crew tells the stories behind the group with never-before-published photos, oral histories from MPC members, and details on the 2009-2010 MPC revival. Starting in 1977, when founding members Slip, Wedge, and Speed started the crew, this account continues with details of how Cap 1 took over and led the crew down its unforgettable path in the 1980s. With a penchant for going to war with rival graffiti crews for train space and territory, which in turn led to the largest city-wide cross-out campaign, the MPC was known as a bunch of thugs who beat, hung, and shot perceived rivals and a group of talent-less “toys.” Wrapped up in this raw tell-all about the bad boys of NYC graffiti, are not just accounts of the crew’s passion for graffiti, but the real-life challenges its young members faced in their urban environment.

It is easier to track the history of Paris through these images than to look for it above ground in the streets. For generations, a broad range of French citizenry has created artwork that responds to historical events like the French Revolution, the storming of the Bastille, Prussian and German soldiers, the Nazi occupation, Resistance workers, civilian and secret societies, the Cataphiles and the student and workers' strikes of the late 1960s. This book illustrates graffiti, painting, sculpture, mosaics and cartoons. Today, the underground labyrinths are plagued by illicit explorers who leave elaborate art behind. This book brings to light these striking images and the insightful text tells the tale that to date has remained underground.

  60. Protest Graffiti Mexico - Oaxaca

160 pages, hardcover- On October 27 2006, when Mexican police opened fire on a crowd of protesters in the city of Oaxaca, killing three people, including American journalist Brad Roland Will, the world became aware of a social conflict that at its core was about the right to an education. Within hours of these shootings, graffiti calling the region's governor a murderer was sprayed throughout the city. Unlike in other cities where graffiti is recognized as a form of public art, in Oaxaca, graffiti became a way of achieving social justice through community organization. And because teachers in Mexico are primarily women, the graffiti is very much inspired and made by women. Shot by Elaine Sendyk in 2007, the photographs in this book depict oppression, empowerment and the messages of struggle and revolt.

Now a new generation of artists has hit the streets and is decorating neighbourhood walls with memorials to the tragic and untimely deaths of friends and loved ones. R.I.P. - assembling the very best of a vibrant street art wave - contains colour photographs of memorials from Harlem and the Lower East Side, the South Bronx and Brooklyn, as well as the moving stories behind them. The victims of shootings, accidents, arguments, police killings and drug-related turf wars may be gone, but thanks to these paintings they are not forgotten: for a violent and indifferent city has also spawned a rich urban art form.

  62. Radiant child - The story young artist Jean-Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat and his unique, collage-style paintings rocketed to fame in the 1980s as a cultural phenomenon unlike anything the art world had ever seen. But before that, he was a little boy who saw art everywhere: in poetry books and museums, in games and in the words that we speak, and in the pulsing energy of New York City. Now, award-winning illustrator Javaka Steptoe's vivid text and bold artwork echoing Basquiat's own introduce young readers to the powerful message that art doesn't always have to be neat or clean--and definitely not inside the lines--to be beautiful.

  64. Rubin: New York/Scandinavia Book

Tony Rubin Sjöman is one of Sweden’s leading contemporary street artists. The art book Rubin: New York / Scandinavia showcases his large scale geometrical murals and brings you to the New York City expat’s studio in Brooklyn. It is a book about art but also about contrasts: beauty versus ugliness, grief versus resolution, the metropolis versus the wilderness.

Tony Rubin Sjöman grew up in a Finnish immigrant home in Gothenburg, Sweden. Today he resides in New York City, where his signature murals can be seen all over the city, from gritty factory walls in the Bronx, to churches in Brooklyn and upscale shopping districts in Manhattan – all bind together by his abstract patterns, reminiscent of Scandinavian design and the brutal architecture of the housing project where he grew up.

Rubin was nine years old when he wrote his first tag. Surrounded by grey concrete and tram tunnels, the walls whispered his name. He grabbed a spray can and set out on a journey that he’s still on today. The move to New York altered his perspective and allowed him to work in a more tolerant environment than that of Gothenburg, where the zero tolerance policy against graffiti has long been the norm. Rubin deconstructed his form of expression, discarded the lettering and perfected his shapes, hence creating a unique aesthetic that carries the art form beyond its boundaries. Rubin’s art is about beauty and grief, alienation, struggle, balance, energy, the cityscape versus wilderness and the notion of class. It’s about a child’s fascination with a magical art form.

“I’m inspired by the contrast between New York City and the wilderness of Lapland, where I have spent the summer months ever since I was a child. Finnish design, such as Marimekko textiles and Alvar Aalto mugs were pretty much basic household items in Finnish working class homes when I was a child but it wasn’t until much later that I learned about architecture and the likes of Eero Saarinen, Alvar Aalto and Matti Suuronen, and they have all inspired my work. I’m also inspired by the almost Neo-futuristic concrete surroundings of Bergsjön, the neighborhood where I grew up, and that I used to consider ugly – the patterns on the balconies, the shapes of the concrete at the tram stops and the water tower that is shaped like a giant UFO.

While Rubin's abstract and geometrical pieces are rooted in traditional graffiti, they break the rules of the craft with their muted color palette and Scandinavian clean lines. The bookRubin: New York / Scandinavia takes you inside his studio, to art galleries and on a journey through the streets of New York City.

RUBIN: New York / Scandinavia is published by Dokument Press, a market leader in the field of quality books on urban culture and street art for more than 15 years.

Texts by Björn Almqvist, the author of several books on graffiti including Writers United and Graffiti Burners.

  67. Schwarz auf Weiss Vol.2 - Style Needs No Color

Style Needs No Color works on the notion that excessive colors and flashy techniques should not be used to repair a weak foundation. They believe that artwork should be able to stand alone without unnecessary distractions and therefore SNNC artists restrict their palette to black and white. In the follow-up release to their successful first book, Schwarz auf Weiss II, you can see the stark beauty and striking simplicity of this idea in action. Since their first title, the SNNC collaboration has expanded significantly, manifesting itself in a series of noteworthy exhibitions, live-painting shows, installations and streetwear collaborations across the world. SNNC has invited a diverse range of international artists from their growing network to contribute black and white, illustrations, vector graphics, street art and graffiti styles to this impressive publication.

  80. Still On and Non The Wiser

144 Pages, Paperback- Until recently, art made in the street and art made within the institution had mutually excluded each other. Graffiti writers have mastered their medium like modern painters but because it did not emerge from a studio it was not considered to be ''real art'' by the critics. Still On, a catalog of a street art exhibition by the Von Der Heydt Museum Wuppertal in Barmen, Germany-, makes the case for graffiti as contemporary art. Beyond notions of vandalism and interventions in public space, graffiti and street art is a dialog between artists and their immediate environment. This exhibit examines how each artist responds to the confines of the Ruhmenshalle Gallery and how the vitality of their work translates successfully to the museum with out losing any of its power or integrity. With works on canvas, installation and painting directly on the gallery walls by Tasek, OS GEMEOS, Herbert Baglione, TILT, MISS VAN, Mirko Reisser, Pius Portman, Stohead, ZEVS Daniel Man, and Heiko Zahlman.

  93. Street Art World

Street art and graffiti are a familiar sight in all our cities. Giant murals commemorate historical events or proclaim the culture of a neighborhood, while tagged walls can function simultaneously as a claim to territory and a backdrop for an urban fashion shoot. Street Art World examines these divergent forms and functions of street art. This strikingly illustrated book explores every aspect of street art, from those who spray it into being to those who revel in it on Instagram, from its place under highway overpasses to one on the austere walls of high art museums. Drawing on over twenty years of research, she juxtaposes the rise and fall of art markets against the vibrancy of the street and urban life, providing a rich history and new ways of contextualizing the words and images—some breathtakingly beautiful—that seem to appear overnight in cities around the world.

  97. Street Renegades - New Underground Art

128 pages- Graffiti and street art have been at the heart of visual subcultures for the past thirty years. However, as time progresses the new wave of artists are moving in fresh directions. Corporate giants have been quick to jump on the graffiti bandwagon, perceiving it as a shortcut to youth culture. Even street stickers have been highjacked by the multinationals for advertising.Frustrated by wholesale corporate theft of the scene, the latest generation of street artists are employing different techniques in their work, different means of dissemination, different materials, different ways of getting their work noticed. Using the detritus of the urban environment—advertising, fly-tipped rubbish, street signs—the new scene is subverting the streetscape in 3D to shock, educate, and entertain. This book documents the new graffiti with photographs of the work and interviews with major players around the world.

  99. Street to Studio

For fifty years, graffiti and street art have been challenging conventions and stimulating debate around our perceptions of what constitutes art. As the genre enters its sixth decade, this ground-breaking book presents a new interpretation of where street art and graffiti are situated today. Introducing the concept of 'Intermural Art' - art in between the walls - Rafael Schacter presents a genre at a key moment of transition. While many street and graffiti artists are still challenging the orthodoxies of the public sphere, an increasingly large group are reshaping the field by no longer furtively entering the institution, no longer slavishly reproducing exterior works inside, but instead attempting to merge out and in to create a form that articulates graffiti, street and contemporary-art influences. Through forty profiles of the leading proponents of this new approach from around the globe, Rafael Schacter presents a compelling analysis for 'Intermural Art' while also showcasing some of the boldest work being made currently.
