1. 100 European Graffiti Artists

One hundred extraordinary artists representing many European cities, each with its own and often uniquely inspiring graffiti scene, including London, Amsterdam, Paris, and more. This dense, sprawling portfolio is the product of “modern day documenter” Steam 156′s undisputed knowledge of European graffiti, and includes artist profiles, most written by the artists themselves, crew affiliations, locations, the year they started, details about style, influences, and characteristic strokes, contours, and angles, with hundreds of photos in all. A medium of powerful, youthful, artistic expression, graffiti spread rampantly across Europe in the early 1980s–and has never ceased. Cities across the continent are now hosts to halls of fame, abandoned spaces, and streets full of incredible work by artists, featured in this book, who are carrying the art form boldly into the future and expanding its influence even further.

Encompassing a wide range of calligraphy in many languages and hands, or styles, this book presents a visual treasury of works by 100 contemporary scribes, all of whom were either born in New York or studied or worked in the city. Traditional uses of hand-lettered calligraphy are shown, including event invitations and envelopes, certificates and awards, and quotes and sayings framed as artwork. The examples also include contemporary applications and nontraditional forms such as graffiti and experimental calligraphy that is not formed from readable characters. 3. 100 UK Graffiti Artists

Simply opening these covers commits you to being dazzled by 100 of the UK’s top “writers” and street artists, immersing yourself in the styles, past and present, which make UK street art great. Upon its arrival in the UK from New York in the 1980s, graffiti rapidly spread across the island, infecting the youth like a stylistic virus. Out of the early days came names that would become part of UK writing legend, such as Mode2, Zaki Dee 163, Choci Roc, Goldie, and Robbo. 6. Action Painting

216 pages. Paperback. The works presented in this book no longer exist - they are all gone for good, washed off the sides of the trains, sometimes hours after they were first created. Often what remains is just a photo, a final remnant of something that took a great deal of skill, courage, and determination to create.

Kristian Kutschera presents the most comprehensive collection of art ever created on Europe's transit systems, with highlights of the past 25 years. Her task was not unlike a treasure hunt, involving a series of conspiratorial meetings and the subsequent arrival of mysterious, unmarked packages.

Inspired by the iconic 1980s book, SUBWAY ART, the painting of trains in Europe continues to flourish. Action Painting gives profound insight into the adventures, techniques, ethics and passion behind this amazing and dangerous art form.

Artivism, is becoming a common way of denouncing conflicts, of being a megaphone of the unfairness, demanding more public space or pushing political agendas; in short, to highlight what does not work well. Artivists use art as a weapon of public and social exigency charged with particular doses of shrewdness, inventiveness, imagination, sense of humour and, above all, social impact, either throughout impressive pieces or the most subtle and invisible actions. 17. Back Jumps - The Live Issue 3

320 pages, paperback- Since 2003, the nationally acclaimed and unique exhibition series BackJumps - The Live Issue has had sensational impact and successes in Berlin. The Backjumps team, built around curator Adrian Nabi, successfully wrapped their third major Live event, in late 2007. While gallery owners and professionals of the culture sector were left rubbing their eyes and the conservative tabloid newspapers elevated the project s profile with cries of scandal, approximately 50,000 enthusiastic art lovers made a pilgrimage to the exhibitions and numerous Backjumps-related side events in Kreuzberg.
BackJumps - Live Issue # 3 , the three-dimensional Live edition of the legendary Backjumps magazine, once again brought the street art scene together to view works of numerous international artists under one roof. In addition to the actual exhibition, several workshops, panel discussions, lectures, urban walks and partner exhibitions took place. Several large scale murals were painted throughout the city under the Backjumps banner and of course, throughout the course of the events, the streets of Berlin were as alive and visual as ever.

All this and much more can be found in the From Here To Fame s newly published 320-page (catalogue-)book, BackJumps - Live Issue # 3 , which, in keeping with former editions, strikes a bold note with its revolutionary design. The book gives the reader an allinclusive tour of the exhibition rooms, describing with brilliant images and thoughtful texts, the work of the 24 artists and projects. Additional information and numerous other works of each individual artist are also found in the extensive artist chapter of the catalogue. With the book s retrospect of Live Issues # 1 and # 2, light is shed on the Backjumps scandal , and the impact that the expositions have had on the Berlin art scene. POET 1 examines the story of the Backjumps magazine, from its humble beginnings to its present day success, while CEMNOZ, CHEECH and DON M. ZAZA elucidate the depths of their style philosophy. Select photographs of the side events, careful documentation of the painted murals and a large chapter on street art that includes more pictures, essays and academic treatises make this volume a must-have for more than just avid lovers of writing and street art.

192 pages, Hardcover - “Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints.” This is the unspoken rule of urban explorers, who sometimes risk their safety, police records, and even their lives to explore abandoned buildings, sewers and storm drains, transit tunnels, utility tunnels, high-security areas of inhabited buildings, and even catacombs such as those in Paris, Rome, Odessa, and Naples.

Although these urban explorers usually work solo or in small teams, they collectively put forth a ground cry against a modern culture that embraces the new, polished, uniform, and mundane. Urban explorers find the beauty — layers of graffiti by years worth of writers, multi-hued peeling paint, antique objects, someone’s initials left in the dust on a broken stained glass window — and physical manifestations of memory that abandoned, impermanent urban spaces can hold.

Beauty in Decay features the best in full-color, panoramic photographs from urban exploration — or Urbex — around the world. Overgrown industrial complexes, disused lunatic asylums, abandoned palaces and forgotten monasteries are showcased, and paired with clear-sighted, poetic text.

  28. Beyond Illustration

200 pages, Hardcover. Topic of this innovative book is the emergence of an exciting new genre of illustration and art. This vivid development is reflected in the intense influx of illustrators to the field of art. The interaction of illustration, art and design is not only most interesting but cannot be avoided as a topic of discussion for anyone who is interested in art and design. In great detail Beyond Illustration presents a significant selection of more than 20 of today’s hottest illustrators and artists from all over the world. The book is showcasing a spellbinding mix of styles ranging from modern to traditional that will attract to professionals and newcomers as well.

Beyond Illustration displays the unique work of these persons and their individual viewpoints concerning this upcoming issue. For many postmodern artists there is a fine line between “illustration” and “art” which even disappears occasionally. The traditional definition for illustration as a service product and art as an autonomous project is less and less maintained as a clear borderline. This fact not only attracts many illustrators to the fields of art but makes you also look at their work as pieces of art. In the US we can clearly observe that more and more pieces of work of traditional illustrators are shown in galleries and at art exhibitions. The same phenomenon can be seen in Europe.

Beyond Illustration discusses all aspects and gives an overview about the trendsetters of the “Scene” and in consideration of the fact it is a must-have, not only for creative professionals and students, but also for artists and anyone who has a sympathy for visual language. This title is the first print-project by the publishers of the ezine castlemagazine. With approximately 30.000 downloads per issue castlemagazine has an undeniable presence in scene and market.

  29. Blade - King of Graffiti

BLADE has already told his life story through graffiti. Now, more than forty years into his career and armed with an incredible memory, BLADE sits down with Chris Pape to reflect on growing up in the Bronx in the turbulent 1970s, and recounts the highs and lows of his storied career, holding nothing back. BLADE is considered “The King of Graffiti” because, by 1980, after painting 5,000 wildly creative trains, he stopped counting. This book parallels the New York graffiti movement almost from its inception, moving through its glory years in the mid-1970s, when BLADE earned his title, and ending in the global art scene, where he remains a major presence. BLADE helped New York graffiti become internationally famous by making it look fun, and, for reasons of quantity, quality, and, perhaps above all, for sheer spirit, BLADE may very well be the most popular graffiti artist with his peers. 31. Blurring Boundaries

    208 pages, Softcover
    9 1/2 x 11 3/4"
    250 Illustrations, English

Hendrick Beikirch, or ECB, is seeking to change our perception of what graffiti is or can be by extending its limits. ECB is a German painter working on large-scale black and white or grayscale murals in public spaces worldwide. This new book is a compilation of the artists work, and provides insight into that work through both interviews and photographs of his process and execution. ECB looks for new approaches and blurs the lines between fine art and graffiti. The scale of his outdoor murals does not take away from the familiarity created in his portraits, often of anonymous faces, making the work accessible to the masses. The astounding scale he works at is made evident in one of his best-known works,  "Where there is no struggle, there is no strength". Located in Busan, South Korea, the mural of a local fisherman is over 20 stories and measures 230 feet, making it Asias tallest mural. Photographs in the book show the work in progress, as well as its context situated against the backdrop of Busans skyscrapers. Blurring Boundaries is an intimate photographic look at ECBs process, body of work and the people who inspire him.

192 pages, hardcover- Boris Hoppek is known as the creator of the Bimbo Dolls series. In addition to humorous new photo installations starring his Bimbos, the book includes a broad selection of Hoppek's fanciful portraits in chalk and spray paint that can be seen in the streets of cities from Barcelona to Berlin. These are supplemented by images of his work on cardboard boxes as well as numerous illustrations and sketches. Rather than approach his art theoretically, Hoppek simply does what he likes to do. This method gives all of his work an aura of childlike authenticity. The combination of amusing motifs and an attractive, handy format make this book an ideal gift.

254 pages, hardcover. Broken Windows - Graffiti NYC documents the flowering of the graffiti movement of the post-train era, and this newly revised 2010 edition has been completely redesigned with 70 more pages and many new photographs. In the 1980's graffiti was pushed out of the subways as the trains were cleaned once and for all. By the end of decade, this new medium was being used to great effect. Photographers James & Karla Murray took great pains to faithfully capture an unprecedented re-birth of the movement, documenting the most significant murals created between 1996 - 2001. Broken Windows contains insightful interviews, an extensive selection of women s' graffiti, and features the work of more than 180 artists from The United States, Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Holland, Italy, and Norway.

  36. Caleb Neelon - Book of Awesome

128 pages, hardcover- Artist and author Caleb Neelon (SONIK) began his graffiti career like anyone else, but the Cambridge, Massachusetts native took a hard right and caught a flight out of town. Across, around, and in between five continents, indoors and out, Caleb has pulled off some unique, colorful, and heartfelt work both alongside collaborators like Os Gemeos and Andrew Schoultz, as well as in streets where he is the first foreigner – let alone street painter – to wander in quite some time. Featuring heartfelt travel stories going beyond the artwork to the socio-political situations that surround them, as well as the large-scale gallery installations of Caleb’s from venues such as the Boston Center for the Arts, Caleb Neelon’s Book of Awesome provides an overview of the work of this diverse and distinctive artist.

  43. Covert to Overt: The Under/Overground Art of Shepard Fairey

The seminal artist’s recent art and poster works, and his triumphant return to his street-art roots with murals, all in work never before published. Shepard Fairey rose out of the skateboarding scene, creating his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign in the late ’80s, and has since achieved a mainstream recognition that most street artists never find. Fairey’s “Hope” poster, created during Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, is arguably the most iconic American image since Uncle Sam. Fairey has become a pop-culture icon himself, though he has remained true to his street-art roots. OBEY: Covert to Overt showcases his most recent evolution from works on paper to grander art installations, cross-cultural artworks, and music/art collaborations. The book also includes his ubiquitous streetwear and chronicles his return to public artworks. His signature blend of politics, street culture, and art makes Fairey unlike any other subculture/street artist working today.
This book showcases the significant amount of art he has created the last several years: street murals, mixed-media installations, art/music events, countless silk screens, and work from his extremely successful OBEY brand.

  46. DARE To Be Different

DARE to be Different chronicles the life and work of pioneering graffiti artist Sigi “DARE” von Koeding, presenting photographs of street pieces, sketches, and more that fully explore Koeding’s legacy. As the graffiti movement spread into Europe from the US in the mid-1980s, DARE rapidly became one of its major protagonists. Born and originally based in Basel, Switzerland, DARE created a network of friends that first stretched half a continent and later came to encompass the globe, his art continuing to find new audiences until the time of his death in 2010. DARE’s original simple four-letter tag evolved into a 3D style that he perfected on canvas as well as on the street; this versatility eventually created a bridge from the back-alley atmosphere of traditional graffiti to the world of avant-garde art galleries, and eventually his contribution to the scene helped it to become an urban spectacle, an art form focused on large-scale mural creations, well-organized competitions, and cultural festivals. His careful eye for form, layout, and coloration gave audiences insight into his personality and often inspired viewers to change their perspective on street art, pushing their perception of the style from simply a form of vandalism to a legitimate art movement. The respect his colleagues had for DARE is still obvious today, especially in Basel, where pieces of his created 25 years ago can still be found untouched by other graffiti artists.

  47. Dave the Chimp - Part of Rebellion 2

128 pages, Paperback- London based artist Dave the Chimp was one of the first street artists who went outside to paint with brushes and acrylic paint. Since 1996 Dave has been extremely prolific in the streets and galleries and has channeled his talent and passion for skating toward designing skateboards for German Skateboard label Hessenmob.

His original style and bold black lines, all hand painted, are humorous, often incorporating lighthearted social commentary. He has painted public service announcements against smoking, “get out the vote” posters, and is often referred to as a “positive” graffiti artist who is just trying to bring a smile to his neighbor’s faces and some beauty to his run down neighborhood.

However humble his aspirations, Dave the Chimp has managed to have an impact around the world with his art. Included is an interview with the artist and many examples of his fine work on walls as well as graphic projects.

Dave the Chimp is the second publication in the Part of Rebellion Series, monographs focusing on artists from the groundbreaking Art of Rebellion and Art of Rebellion 2 first published in 2004.

  50. Dishu

The first survey on contemporary calligraphic practices in Chinese public spaces. This photographic essay traces the roots of this hand writing phenomenon and its development in Chinese society and analyses in detail the do-it-yourself writing tools specially designed for street lettering Thousands of anonymous street calligraphers operate daily in Chinese parks and streets. The endlessly tracing texts composed of «hanzi» signs slowly disappear as water evaporates. This phenomenon, called «dishu» (earth writing or practicing ephemeral calligraphy on the ground using clear water as ink), appeared in the beginning of the 1990s in a north Beijing park and soon spread to most major Chinese cities. Based on classic Chinese literature, poetry or aphorisms, these monumental letterings, ranging from static and regular to highly cursive styles, make the whole body break into spontaneous dance and infinite formal renewals. This street calligraphic practice corresponds to both a socializing need and an individual search for self accomplishment or improvement. «Dishu: Ground Calligraphy in China» is the first survey on contemporary calligraphic practices in Chinese public spaces, documented during the summer of 2011 in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang. It takes the form of a major pho- tographic essay, which traces the roots of this hand writing phenomenon and its development in Chinese society, analyses in detail the do-it-yourself writing tools specially designed for street lettering and explores its possible transposition into other writing cultures. 320 pages

128 pages, softcover. Third edition in this remarkably successful series is devoted to one of the greats of the Dutch and European street art scene, Erosie. Active since 1993, Erosie has developed a totally unique style that in his own words "...looks for parallels between and the nuances of the graffiti-codes, the illustrated image, commercial visual language and the traditions of art..." His goals are to use, confirm, deny or question these fields visually and/or conceptually in the quest to define his own personal visual language, which is a mixture of street art and pop art. He uses humor, mixes graffiti lettering with typography, challenges us with puns and wordplay and his illustrative style is a cross between Edward Gorey and Robert Crumb — think no further than the headless chicken or the two rappers, Jay-Z and Nas, battling it out in cartoon form.

72 pages, hardcover. These images represent the European cities of Palermo, Istanbul, Budapest, Paris and Berlin through their surface markings. In five sequences of closely related photographs Sinclair takes characteristic features of the urban landscape - the park, the subway station, the street, the cemetery and the bridge - to explore the interaction between a city and its citizens as recorded in graffiti. Yet the visible effects of weather and the passage of time acknowledge the ultimate ephemerality of this human activity, lending the images an elegiac quality and their subject the aspect of a natural process. In this, the second in a trilogy of books to examine the surfaces of European cities, we are invited to look at graffiti anew: not as aggressive intrusions, but rather as part of an ongoing, collaborative transformation of the modern city.

  60. From The Platform Book

See the New York City transit system at a time the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has tried hard to forget. In the early ’80s, graffiti writer Paul Cavalieri, who writes “CAVS,” was drawn to the colorful tags on trains. He started learning train schedules so he could snap works by many writers of the time. This is a compilation of subway graffiti from 1983 to 1989, when the MTA announced that its fleet was entirely graffiti-free. More than 325 color photos capture everything from motion-bombed train interiors riddled with pilot marker tags to epic works covering whole exteriors, top to bottom. Artists tell their tales of adventure throughout and reminisce about working on live third rails, navigating the complex subway system to find their works, and witnessing graffiti’s gradual disappearance from the trains. This book presents a nostalgic look at 1980s New York City and the street artists that gave it soul.

Future/Memory is a book about the exhibition with the same name, organized in Dresden, Germany at HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts Dresden, during the summer of 2013.

The book shows the nature of the work of artists like Boogie, Martha Cooper, Cody Hudson and Horfée - artists that all stems from, and get their inspiration from street culture and urban environment.

The artists express their creativity in different techniques and on different subjects. Wasted objects lying in the street are turned into sculptures; images of children playing in the Bronx are transformed into timeless testimonies of the 1980s. Graffiti are converted into abstract and conceptual art, and a blank wooden wall becomes a contemporary vision of an archaic altar.
Future/Memory condenses images of the past and the future taken from human urban surroundings and enlightens the importance of the artistic dialogues, their gestures and energy of street life.
Most of the exhibited works were created on site, ranging from painting, photography, sculpture, installations and conceptual art.

Future/Memory is an innovative and exciting dialogue between street culture and contemporary art featuring some of the most internationally renowned artists and photographers.

The artists featured in Future/Memory are Boogie, Martha Cooper, Horfée, Cody Hudson, HuskMitNavn, Cleon Peterson, Jay “One” Ramier, Skki and SuperBlast

There’s no glory without attitude. And so Wholetrain Press opens a new editorial era to improve the depth of the Glorious project, taking it to the next level: ATTITUDE. If Glorious was an overview of work from the most active Italian (and not) trainbombers, Glorious ATTITUDE instead is a series of special monographic-books dedicated to the most worthy exponents of the made-in-Italy graffiti world. ATTITUDE is also a report documented through exclusive pics and statements which, chapter after chapter, create a sort of personal diary. Somehwere between déjà vu and sensations to which only those who have spent nights in rail yards can relate, Glorious ATTITUDE accompanies a continuously evolving phoenomenon, focusing on its main characters one at a time, in order to express every trainbomber’s subculture. The first book in the series comes from the ML’S crew and features Cook, an eclectic monster of the commuter-battle who has been for years setting on fire the northern Italy lines in particular. He is a character in a class of his own and as real a writer as they come. ATTITUDE offers a cross section made of pure style, lettering, colour and steel. Merry trainspotting to everybody.

  63. Graffiti and Street Art

The traditional letter-based writing that appeared on the streets of Philadelphia and New York over forty years ago has evolved into two distinct disciplines. While both thrive illegally and challenge the concept of public space, the new wave of street art puts greater emphasis on figures, abstraction, symbols and formal techniques.

This incisive and highly readable survey traces the evolution of graffiti and street art and explores the motivations and practices of the leading exponents. Terms and language are examined in detail – from tags and throwies to culture jamming and subvertising – along with their many influences and genres.

Uniquely, Graffiti and Street Art analyses not just the work, but the functions of graffiti and street art and their increasingly important role in urban visual culture. The picture that emerges is a rich celebration of two of the defining art movements of the twenty-first century.

Anna Wacławek began researching graffiti and street art in the late 1990s, travelling extensively in Canada and the USA as well as Japan, China, Poland, Germany, the UK, France and Spain to conduct first-hand analysis. She holds several professional qualifications in art history and currently works at Concordia University, Montreal, in the Department of Art History.

  65. Graffiti City: The History of Art and Vandalism on Rio's Streets

Cidade Grafitada delves into the heart of Carioca culture through arguably its most controversial prism: the streets. Straddling the line between art and vandalism, Cidade Grafitada explores the relationship between Pixação and Graffiti (graffiti art), and how these two distinctly Carioca cultures reflect what it means to be Carioca. Cidade Grafitada examines the numerous visual forms of expression that also fight for space on Rio’s walls, and how the streets have become a genuine space for dialogue. Cidade Grafitada is the first book to present a detailed historical timeline of Rio's urban arts and vandalism cultures, and looks at the social and political pressures that helped mold art and vandalism on Rio’s streets.

  66. Graffiti ist Jazz mit Buchstaben

Sabine Ullrich and Frank Pudel accompanied and studied the graffiti and street art scene in Mid-Germany Area with the photo camera for two years. All portrayed protagonists in this book share the same big passion: painting building facades with spray cans – sometimes socio-critical as a meditative act, sometimes inspired by baroque, spontaneous and artistically innovative or as a rewarded, commissioned piece. In many cases, their artworks are vanished, repainted or weather-beaten in a short time. What remains, is only the photo.

  68. Graffiti Tattoo Vol.2

Survey of international artists that merge these two vivid art forms: graffiti art and tattoo. Documenting the transition that graffiti writers are increasingly making into the tattoo world, this is #2 in this definitive series. Since the 70s, graffiti artists have made the leap to become muralists, fashion designers, art directors, and now late tattoo artists. Similar to the graffiti movement, in which the artists battle with one another in the public eye to be the best and most respected, the same competitive spirit holds within the tattoo world. These tattoos are a language filled with graffiti style burners and characters that are a departure from the standard tribal design and sailor styles. While the first book allowed a rare glimpse into this movement, this much larger successor provides a full-blown compendium of these fantastic burners on skin. Includes the work of Blen167, Chucho, Franz Jager, Kaves, Jason Kundell, Logan, Norm, Sabe, and many others.

  69. Graffiti World Updated Edition: Street Art from Five Continents

Graffiti World, now updated, is the most comprehensive and bestselling survey of graffiti art ever published. The original collection of more than 2,000 illustrations by over 150 artists around the world is joined by a new section devoted to work created in the five years since the book's first edition.
Graffiti has long been a ubiquitous aspect of the urban landscape, since anonymous, largely unsung spray-can art first hit city walls in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1960s. As hip-hop culture spread from America, graffiti became a worldwide phenomenon, emerging in the 1980s as the symbolic artistic language of young people everywhere.
Today's graffiti artists incorporate a variety of mediums, including stickers, stencils, oils, acrylics, and oil-based chalk, as well as an ever-expanding range of social commentary. This evolution in style and subject matter has guaranteed graffiti's long-lasting influence on art, graphic design, and style around the world.

  76. If You're Reading This, There's Still Time.

Morley is a Los Angeles-based street artist that specializes in bold, typographic posters which he wheat pastes within the urban landscape. Blending humor, hope and his unique perspective on life, Morley's aim is to act as a friendly voice amongst the cacophony of billboarded messages and corporate slogans. This voice was given a face when he began including an image of himself in each of his pieces, looking to create a more intimate relationship between the artist and the audience than many of his anonymous contemporaries could allow. In 2011, Morley's work caught the eye of Steve Lazarides whose Outsiders imprint began selling his work, describing it thusly: "His sympathetic statements give the tirelessly aspirational residents a welcome reminder of what's important in life: love, simple pleasures, making the world a slightly better place and not hating on yourself too much." Today, he continues to paste his work in any city that doesn't enforce their vandalism laws through caning. Also he made us promise to include the fact that he can hold his breath for over an hour, and that if anyone challenged him to a breath holding contest, they would totally lose - but he was probably lying about that.

  79. JR and Art Spiegelman: The Ghosts of Ellis Island

In August 2014 the French artist JR received an unprecedented invitation to work in the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital, a building on the south side of the island that has been abandoned and closed to visitors since 1954. About ten percent of the millions of migrants who passed through Ellis Island, having been deemed not healthy enough to enter the United States, spent some time in the hospital. For Unframed―Ellis Island, documented in The Ghosts of Ellis Island, JR chose about 20 archival photographs of the hospital's patients and staff and wheat-pasted these images around the abandoned building, creating haunting scenes that bring the history of these rooms back to life: a family looking out at the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, a small boy lying on an empty bed frame, patients staring out of the caged "psychopathic" ward. The work, which is accessible by guided tour, will remain up "until it decides to disappear." Along with images of JR's photographic interventions in the hospital, this publication includes new illustrations by legendary cartoonist Art Spiegelman, who collaborated with JR on illustrated narratives about Ellis Island's immigrants.
JR (born 1983) is best known for his monumental, wheat-pasted street portraiture projects. His ongoing project Unframed involves installing archival images and images from anonymous photographers in new contexts. JR has carried out Unframed projects in Marseille, São Paulo, Vevey, Atlanta, Baden Baden and Washington, DC. In 2014 he worked inside the theater of the NYC Ballet creating a 6,500-square-foot composite image of NYCB dancers depicted nearly life-size that, when seen from above, forms a giant eye. JR won the TED Prize for 2011.
Art Spiegelman (born 1948) is an American cartoonist, editor and comics advocate based in New York City, best known for his graphic novel Maus (1991). His work as coeditor on the comics magazines Arcade and Raw has been influential, and he spent a decade as contributing artist for The New Yorkerwhere he made several high-profile and sometimes controversial covers.

  90. KRINK New York City: Graffiti, Art, and Invention

Craig Costello, aka KR, grew up in Queens, New York, where graffiti was part of the landscape and a symbol of the city. While living in San Francisco, he quickly garnered attention when his signature "KR" tag popped up throughout the city. As he became one of the more prominent figures on the streets on NYC and San Francisco, he began to hone his craft by creating better tools launching his own line of homemade markers and mops, combining his moniker KR with the word INK. In KRINK: GRAFFITI, ART, AND INVENTION, Costello has compiled a visual memoir: from his early days of the '80s and '90s and launch with the hip New York City retailer Alife, which put his brand on the map, to his evolution as an artist and high-fashion collaborator.

The book showcases Costello's seminal style and his extensive body of work, including site specific installations around the world. It also chronicles his myriad collaborations with Alife, Nike, Coach, Moncler, Modernica, Marc Jacobs, Levi Strauss & Co., Mini (BMW), Casio, Smith Optics, Carhartt, Kidrobot, Medicom Toy, agnès b., and Colette, among many others. Today, Costello's reach and influence goes far beyond urban street culture. Krink has grown exponentially into a global artist materials brand with expanding collections of apparel, tools, and accessories, while Costello's unique aesthetic can be seen on objects from sneakers to luxury goods to cars.

KRINK is both stylish and informative, capturing the ethos of punk and hip-hop culture, and is sure to appeal to the fans of high/low cultural crossovers, as well as die-hard fans of street art and fashion.

  93. Like Lipstick Traces

226 pages, hardcover- 13 graffiti writers, 2 years, 600 unpublished Polaroids. Like Lipstick Traces shows the everyday life of 13 graffiti writers. Consciously, and therefore in contrast with usual graffiti publications, it uses the peculiar medium of Polaroid. A Polaroid camera and about one hundred Polaroid photos was sent to well known graffiti writers of different nationalities. The task was to shoot their everyday life with complete freedom in the choice of the motifs. It is that freedom which makes this book so special, but also the fact that all these unpublished photos were taken especially for the book. In the beginning of the 21st century, graffiti seems to be taking a line which is totally against its original motivation. On one hand, this might be caused by more severe penalties, on the other it is due to the increasing incorporation of the media and big business. Thus, the artists presented in this book devote themselves to this art in a committed way. They do not succumb to commercial pressure and they bring new life into the graffiti movement. Artists featured are AROE (UK), C.B.S (DE), DUMBO (IT), HONET (FR), KEGR (DK), O CLOCK (FR), OS CURURUS (BR), RATE (USA), REMIO (NOR), ROCKY (ES), SCAN (CA), SMASH (CH), THE E.R.S (BE).

  94. London Burners

144 pages, flexicover- A young photographer explores the artistry and adventure that goes into the incredible graffiti of London's overground and underground trains. Some of the most outrageous graffiti art in the world barrels through the city of London in a blur of color. These moving canvases and the people who create the dubs or burners are the subject of an electrifying collection of images by photographer Jete Swami. As a teenager, he hung out in sidings and soon learned to paint trains, all the while taking photos and filming his friends-which he continues to do today. In revealing interviews with the photographer, these artists speak out about the joys and dangers of bombing and burning their tags, throw-ups and pieces on to London transport. In addition to vibrant reproductions of the works themselves are shots of the artists as they work under cover of night or scramble to avoid arrest. A unique collection of London's most dazzling high-speed train art, London Burners captures the intensity of this most urban of artistic expressions.

  100. Martha Cooper - Street Play

121 pages, paperback- Martha Cooper's photos take us through the Alphabet City of the late 70's as the area was about to undergo extensive urban renewal a process that is still continuing today. At the time, the neighborhood had more than its share of drug dealers and petty criminals, and the landscape seemed ugly and forbidding. But to the children who grew up there, the abandoned buildings and rubble-strewn lots made perfect playgrounds, providing raw materials and open space for unsupervised play. A crumbling tenement housed a secret clubhouse, rooftops became private aviaries, and a pile of trash might be a source for treasure.
